Chlorine in Zwickau's drinking water: Safety measures are underway!

There is currently an issue in Zwickau that is on the minds of many citizens: unusually high chlorine levels in drinking water. Environmental germs have been detected in drinking water for around three weeks, which has prompted the waterworks to chlorinate the water more. The chlorination measures will continue until the entire drinking water network is stable and germ-free again. Radio Zwickau informs that this chlorination is strictly monitored and meets the highest standards of the Drinking Water Ordinance.

There is one main reason for the development of the last few days: routine examinations in the Zwickau supply area had shown the presence of coliform germs to a minimal extent. Despite all this, according to the Zwickau waterworks, there is no danger to general health. The drinking water is disinfected with additional chlorine in close coordination with the health department. The chlorine content is within the legal requirements, so there are no health concerns. Only the taste and smell of the water can be slightly affected by chlorination. The City of Zwickau expects that this measure will be scaled back in the next few days.

Transparent communication and education

The Zwickau waterworks have committed to informing the affected care facilities and hospitals about the situation in order to ensure the highest level of safety. In addition, the public is regularly informed about the current status of water quality. There is an open ear for all those affected: “We regret any inconvenience caused,” said a spokesman for the waterworks.

As part of the Drinking Water Ordinance issued by the Federal Ministry of Health, responsibility for drinking water quality and monitoring are clearly regulated. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that the quality of drinking water is defined as harmless to health. The existing regulations ensure that both water suppliers and health authorities regularly check water quality. This means that citizens are protected in the best possible way.

In conclusion, increased chlorination is a necessary step to ensure public health. The city administration and the waterworks are working hand in hand to return to normality as quickly as possible. At a time when fresh and clean water is one of the most important sources of life, it is reassuring to know that we can rely on an effective monitoring system in Zwickau.
