FSV Zwickau celebrates its first home win: Somnitz shines with a brace!
On August 31, 2025, FSV Zwickau achieved a remarkable 2-0 win against ZFC Meuselwitz in the first home game of the new season. In front of 4,268 enthusiastic spectators in the GGZ Arena, where it was another home game after a year and a day without defeat, captain Maximilian Somnitz impressed twice: he scored both goals for the hosts and thus secured the FSV the deserved success.
However, the game didn't start quite clearly for the Zwickau team. In the 7th minute, the team couldn't finish through the crowd and an offside decision prevented the first shot on goal. Meuselwitz then won the ball in the 12th minute, but Florian Hansch headed just wide. And Jan Halasz also couldn't take advantage of a good header chance in the 23rd minute.
A strong comeback
After Zwickau had a few chances in the first half but were unsuccessful, a penalty in the 34th minute gave them the lead. ZFC defender Hendrik Wurr met Lukas Eixler in the penalty area and caused the penalty, which Somnitz confidently converted. The Zwickau team continued to press and were unable to add to the score thanks to a double chance from Möbius and Haubner shortly before half-time.
The home team was the more active team in the second half. Somnitz had the crowd cheering again in the 60th minute when he scored his second goal. This strong performance catapulted Zwickau to 8th place in the current Regionalliga Northeast table.
Outlook for upcoming games
FSV Zwickau's next game is already around the corner. On September 7th at 2 p.m. the Saxony Cup will take place against VfB Zwenkau. This encounter is classified as a risk game and promises exciting moments. Zwickau wants to continue his positive streak and ideally get his next win soon.
The fans can look forward to the next games. FSV Zwickau will face VSG Altglienicke on September 12th before facing the second team from 1. FC Magdeburg on September 16th. How coach Rico Schmitt's team will develop remains to be seen, but the atmosphere after the first home game is great.
With this victory, FSV Zwickau did a good job and shows that they are always a force to be reckoned with in their home stadium. The club, with its 2,643 members and a proud tradition of red and white colors, wants to show that it is one of the teams to be taken seriously this season.
