Grenade found while clearing out garage in Zwickau – police on duty!
In Zwickau, a 77-year-old man discovered a grenade while clearing out a garage. This unexpected find caused a stir on Erich-Mühsam-Straße when the police were informed on Friday. The grenade, which probably dates from the times of the National People's Army, measured 120 mm by 550 mm.
As the Saxon reported, it was initially unclear whether the bullet was filled with live or empty ammunition. Special forces from the State Criminal Police Office were called in to investigate and found that the grenade was equipped with an intact detonator and explosives. This discovery made immediate on-site defusing a dangerous proposition.
Decision to blow up
In view of the danger, it was decided to detonate the projectile in a controlled manner in the surrounding area. A police helicopter was deployed to search for a suitable location and secure the region. A serious alarm was raised, but around 5 p.m. the found ammunition was removed by the specialists without any further incident.
The unfortunate discovery of an old military artifact once again reinforces the importance of safety measures when clearing out a garage. The incident not only surprised the senior citizen, but also raises questions about the disposal of old military items that often lie dormant in the farthest corners of garages or barns.
At a time when many people are clearing out and tidying up their living spaces, the case could also serve as a warning: old things can sometimes hold more secrets than you initially think. There could be a grenade hiding there that supposedly is just a piece of scrap. This makes it clear to us once again how important it is to know about such finds and to take the right course of action if the worst comes to the worst.
