KohlWelt Oelsnitz honored with Saxon Museum Prize for Innovation!

On November 11, 2025, the Saxon Museum Prize awarded, and the KohlWelt – Museum Coal Mining Saxony in Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge was pleased to receive the main award. This renowned museum, which vividly conveys the life and work environment of miners, will receive a prize of 20,000 euros for its special quality and innovative strength.

It's not just the KohlWelt Museum that receives the Saxon Museum Prize. At the same time, two special prizes of 5,000 euros each will go to the Hoyerswerda Castle & City Museum and the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig. This shows that Saxony can boast a diverse and outstanding museum offering.

KohlWelt as an innovative learning place

The Coal World Museum, which opened in 1986 as the Karl-Liebknecht-Schacht mining museum, has evolved over the years. Today it presents itself as an innovative learning and experience location with interactive exhibits and digital offerings. The comprehensive redesign has helped families and interested parties to immerse themselves in the technology, everyday life and culture of mining in an interesting way.

Jan Färber, the museum director, emphasizes how important this award is in recognition of the committed team from the Erzgebirgskreis that runs the museum. He emphasizes that the Saxon Museum Prize not only recognizes the work done, but also the central role of the museum in regional cultural history.

Importance of hard coal

Culture Minister Barbara Klepsch congratulated the award winners and underlined the important role that hard coal has played in Saxony's industrial history. Her words make it clear that the connection between culture and industry is particularly important in this region. The prize, which is awarded every two years to non-governmental museums, aims to reward exemplary achievements in museum work and to promote public awareness of such institutions.

Overall, the awarding of the Saxon Museum Prize shows how lively and dynamic the museum landscape in Saxony is. Museums like the KohlWelt are not only guardians of history, but also active mediators of knowledge and cultural heritage. They invite you to discover old traditions and at the same time develop new perspectives on the past. So if you're up for an exciting excursion, you can go on an interesting journey through time at the KohlWelt Museum.
