Power of resistance: 'Michael Kohlhaas' inspires in the Vogtlandtheater!
The theater landscape in our region experienced an exciting boom. The work by Heinrich von Kleist is currently particularly popular, and this season, with “The Broken Pitcher”, it is being introduced into schools as high school material. The novella “Michael Kohlhaas” is also gaining in importance, especially in these times when social divisions often shape the picture. How MDR writes, the story is about a horse trader who is betrayed by a castle lord and ultimately rebels against an unjust system.
Today, November 7th, 2025, the production of “Michael Kohlhaas” is on the program at the Vogtlandtheater Plauen. The clown group Compania Sincara brings this story to the stage with lots of music, humor and creative ideas. The simple design with fabric panels and ropes allows viewers to dream themselves into uma's fragile and dynamic world. The central question of the performance revolves around Kohlhaas' identity: is he the hero, the rebel or even a terrorist? The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and lasts approximately 90 minutes, without an intermission.
Another cultural highlight
Viewers are also offered the opportunity to experience the monodrama “Sophonisbe,” which was created by Christian Gottlob Neefe, a musician from Chemnitz. This piece, which is receiving particular attention in the Capital of Culture year, will be performed at the NETZ-Werk Neukirchen on November 3rd at 7:30 p.m. It deals with the dramatic conflicts of a woman caught in the Punic Wars between two kings and the Roman Empire.
The comedy “The Imaginary Sick” by Molière will be performed at the Mittelsächsisches Theater in Freiberg on November 9th at 5 p.m. This is all about the hypochondriac Argan, who insists that his daughter marry a doctor. This modernized version by Martin Heckmanns promises to be less confusing and more entertaining. The performance lasts 100 minutes and includes an intermission.
Kitchen magic in the opera
Not to be forgotten is the dance theater “Cinderella”, which is staged in the Chemnitz Opera House. Ballet director Sabrina Sadowska relocates the well-known fairy tale plot to the glamorous fashion world of the 1940s and combines this with the impressive music by Sergei Prokofiev. The performance on November 2nd at 4 p.m. lasts 135 minutes, including an intermission, and challenges the dancers both in terms of dancing and acting.
The Chemnitz Puppet Theater’s research project “Experiment on My Grandfather” provides deeper reflection on personal identity and family history. Using a puppet that is moved by several people, this production addresses questions about one's own history during the Nazi regime. The premiere is on November 9th at 6 p.m., with further performances on November 27th at 8 p.m. in the Spinnbau Chemnitz. The duration of the performance is 70 minutes, again without an intermission.
This diverse selection of performances powerfully demonstrates how theater and music intertwine to be both entertaining and educational. The region has a lot to do in the cultural field and it is worth more than just a visit to immerse yourself in these fascinating worlds.
