Cultural experiences in the Garden Kingdom: Cooling off in the heat!

A hot weekend is coming! While the temperatures are still rising like summer, there are numerous ways to avoid the heat. In the Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia region there are particularly cultural highlights that not only provide refreshment, but also inspiring experiences. If you are interested in excursions, you should definitely check out the recommendations from MDR view.

Exciting exhibitions in air-conditioned museums or exploring cool palaces and castles are just some of the options available this summer. The show mine also offers a refreshing escape from the heat and lots of adventure.

Cultural oases in the Garden Kingdom

A special destination that is ideal for a day trip is the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz. This unique ensemble combines the principles of the 18th century Enlightenment with the English garden style and has made a name for itself as one of the most outstanding landscape gardens in Europe. Under the regime of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau, who ruled from 1740 to 1817, made the principality a center of the Enlightenment and today forms the basis for many cultural and educational experiences in the Garden Kingdom.

The garden kingdom boasts six different parks and a variety of small architectures that stretch along the Elbe and the Mulde. The most important complexes include Luisium Castle, the Mosigkau Rococo Ensemble and the Großkühnau Landscape Park. The most famous highlight is the Wörlitzer Park, which is open all year round and impresses with its romantic landscapes and historical buildings. The special architecture of Wörlitz Castle, which was built between 1769 and 1773, offers an insight into ancient art with numerous sculptures and paintings.

A circular route for explorers

For those who like to take more than just a snapshot, there is the Fürst Franz Garden Kingdom Tour, a 70 km long circular route that connects numerous sights. The Dessau-Wörlitz Railway also runs from April to October and takes day trippers comfortably from Dessau via Oranienbaum to Wörlitz. The times and prices of ferries, gondolas and other park attractions vary, but there are discounted rates for groups and students.

Wörlitzer Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is not only a place for recreation, but also an example of the application of Enlightenment principles in landscape design. The authenticity of the architectural and art monuments is undisputed and guarantees visitors an authentic experience in which education and art are closely linked.

Wörlitzer also offers guided tours of the castle, which are limited to a maximum of 15 people and cover various topics. Those interested will gain deeper insights into the history and development of the garden kingdom, while they can enjoy the cool atmosphere of the rooms.

So as the hottest weekend of the year approaches, there's plenty of opportunity to escape the heatwave while immersing yourself in the region's cultural treasures. Whether in the cool castle, in the shade of the trees or on a relaxed boat trip - there is something for every taste!
