After an attack on fans: Aue U16 champions and on course for promotion despite the scandal!

On June 7, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred during a youth game between the U16 of FC Erzgebirge Aue and the U17 of FSV Zwickau. The game was canceled due to an attack on visiting fans, which caused waves in the Saxon football scene. The Saxon Football Association (SFV) scored the game 2-0 for Zwickau, thus dealing Aue a serious blow in the race for the championship. Despite this defeat, the U16 from Aue was able to triumph on the last matchday of the youth Saxony league and secured the title as “State Champion of Saxony” with a 4-2 win against Borea Dresden.

As a result, FC Erzgebirge Aue accepted the verdict without objection, even though the club initially led 1-0 in the game. With this decision, a fine of 2,000 euros was also imposed on Aue. The association plans to pass these costs on to the identified perpetrators as soon as their identities are established. “The behavior of those responsible for the club site affects the entire community,” said a spokesman for the club. The incident received a lot of media attention and raised eyebrows in the region.

A worrying incident

The police were heavily criticized in connection with the incident as no one was at the scene despite a previous request for police presence. This raises questions about safety at youth games. The SFV confirmed that FC Erzgebirge Aue had done everything possible in advance to ensure order and safety. Nevertheless, the alleged “supporters of the home club” bore the main responsibility for the attack.

In the context of football games, especially at youth level, the safety of players and spectators is a constant challenge. The process of coming to terms with the events has already begun, and FC Erzgebirge Aue announced that it would impose harsh penalties on those involved.

Prevention and responsibility in football

The incident once again highlights the need for a structured approach to violence and security issues in football. Interpersonal violence, whose forms range from physical to psychological violence, does not stop at football. Fast and comprehensive prevention work is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of young people in sports clubs. In its initiatives, the German Football Association (DFB) points out that an offensive approach to the issue is considered a characteristic of responsible club work. This also includes the protection of children and young people in sporting environments, which is important today.

The U16 from FC Erzgebirge Aue will now compete in the relegation against the Thuringian champions FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in order to achieve promotion to the regional league. And despite all the difficulties, the hope remains that the football game will remain an event that conveys community and joy instead of being overshadowed by violence.
