Renovation of the Planitz lido: When will the new stainless steel pools come?

The swimming season at the Planitz lido is coming to an end and there is exciting news for all swimming enthusiasts. Rumors about a possible renovation of the popular outdoor swimming pool in Zwickau due to a lack of money were firmly rejected by the city of Zwickau. In fact, the season is still ongoing, which ultimately depends on the weather. Over 500,000 guests have visited the lido in the last 20 years, which has long been a popular place for citizens. But this season also has its downsides, because the lido will be closed on Sunday, September 3rd, 2023 to make way for the Glück Auf swimming pool - which opens on September 4th, 2023.

Thank you for the 2023 season! By August 21st, around 56,000 people had visited the lido, while the previous year there were more than 70,000 visitors at the same time. These figures show the high importance of this leisure activity for Zwickau residents and its guests. From September 4th, the outdoor pool will be closed until next season, but the anticipation for the coming year can already be felt.

Renovation work is pending

After the end of the bathing season, urgent renovation work is planned in the fall to make the property winter-proof. These measures are not only a mandatory exercise, but also a great opportunity to further improve the quality of the lido. The Association of Municipal Companies reports that more than a third of the outdoor swimming pools in Germany will need to be renovated in the next five years. This reality is also reflected in Zwickau, where many operators are now realizing that comprehensive renovations are urgently needed.

According to a survey, 88 percent of pool operators stated that the need for financing is high. Most also complain about increased construction costs, which makes the situation even more difficult. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) warns that without appropriate renovation measures, hundreds of public pools could be closed.

Political support required

The new federal government has announced plans to provide one billion euros for the modernization of sports facilities, from which swimming pools could also benefit. Association boss Ingbert Liebing emphasizes the need to permanently increase the programs in order to continue to secure the pools as part of the municipal services. Nevertheless, the opposition warns that the tax plans could lead to billions of dollars in shortened revenue, which could ultimately result in the closure of swimming pools and other important facilities.

The future of the Planitz lido remains exciting. As visitors wait for the 2024 season, it is important to continue to monitor and support municipal efforts to build a more solid financial foundation. The citizens of Zwickau hope that the first new stainless steel pools will soon be visible in their favorite bathrooms.
