Security and chaos: Simson meeting in Zwickau causes excitement!

The largest Simson meeting in Germany once again attracts numerous fans to the airfield in Zwickau. This year the event takes place in the shadow of several security policy challenges. The colorful group of mopeds and their proud owners, like Heike Hilbig from Schwäbisch Gmünd, who arrived with her eye-catching pink Simson “Star”, bring lightness to the festive season. Hilbig, who runs a driving school, emphasizes the importance of mopeds for the young generation and is pleased to be taking part in the meeting for the fourth year. “The enthusiasm of the young people is simply contagious,” she says full of enthusiasm in an interview with blick.de.

But not everything is carefree. The security situation has become more explosive in recent years, which is also reflected in the preparations for this year. The Saxon Ministry of the Interior has called for a better security concept in order to prevent right-wing extremist incidents in particular. Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) emphasizes the urgency of a viable plan that excludes crimes, especially of an unconstitutional nature. Before the meeting began, the police in Zwickau had not expected a larger number of right-wing radicals. Everything seemed calm, but the reality on the ground turned out to be different. MDR.de reported a total of 16 registered crimes, including several assault offenses and property crimes.

Safety concerns and incidents

Especially since 15 crimes had already been recorded by Friday morning, five of which were reports of unconstitutional organizations. The suspects are mostly young men between the ages of 17 and 27 who were noticed wearing clothing decorated with political symbols. Overall, in order to maintain security, the police issued house bans and evictions in four cases. As the reports show, there was an increase in crimes, especially in the evening hours.

Another notable detail: a Trabi with a swimming pool is among the exhibitors, which at least gives the event a certain humorous aspect. However, the debate about anti-constitutional gestures and the instrumentalization of the Simson moped for right-wing extremist ideologies is coming to the fore. Bruno Dietel, the grandson of Simson designer Karl Clauss Dietel, speaks out clearly against these developments and emphasizes that the appropriation of his grandfather would deeply outrage him. “He would have turned against the emerging authoritarian tendencies,” said Dietel, who died in 2022.

Outlook and lessons

Investigations are in full swing to clarify the background to the incidents, and the police have set up their own information portal. The incident may seem disturbing, but it underlines the important need for security concepts like those we know from other major events, such as the 2010 Love Parade in Duisburg, where serious security deficiencies led to the deaths of many people. Monami dealt with such security concepts in a bachelor's thesis and shows that thorough planning can prevent mistakes and tragedies.

At the Samson meeting itself, however, the anticipation for the next few days remains. Despite the challenges and the current security situation, the community around Simson mopeds remains strong. It remains to be seen how the event will develop and whether the desired security measures will take effect.
