Safety before fun: Zwickau increases supervision at the Simson meeting!
The largest Simson meeting in Germany starts on Thursday in Zwickau and will last until Sunday. Thousands of fans of the legendary Simson two-wheelers from Suhl are expected to come together for a colorful program. However, organizer Dominic Wölfe has announced that security precautions have been significantly increased this year. This is particularly important after numerous crimes and right-wing extremist incidents occurred at the event last year, as MDR reported.
The city of Zwickau has developed a comprehensive security concept in close cooperation with the police department. Uniformed police officers as well as plainclothes officers and communications teams will be on site for this purpose. In addition, additional forces from the Saxon riot police and other Saxon departments are on alert. Traffic controls will be set up particularly on Reichenbacher Straße, which means that significant traffic disruptions are to be expected.
Security and incidents from previous years
In the past, the Samson meeting brought not only joy but also violence. In July 2022 there were breaches of the peace, attempted grievous bodily harm and even property damage through fire. Investigations were initiated into anti-constitutional symbolism and right-wing extremist slogans. Among other things, Sächsische.de reported on a video in which participants shouted “Germany the Germans, foreigners out”.
It is known that people with Nazi tattoos and Hitler salutes were present at previous meetings. On the central day of the event, the situation escalated when several small fires broke out on the site and up to 400 supporters attacked the emergency services with objects. This year, the police have already launched a call for witnesses and are using a tip portal to collect information about possible crimes.
Right-wing extremism in Germany
The issue of right-wing extremism must not be forgotten. With a potential population of around 15,300 violent right-wing extremists, which has increasingly developed in recent years, the situation is serious. According to the Verfassungsschutz, the total number of registered right-wing extremist crimes in 2024 was 37,835, which corresponds to an increase of 47.4% compared to 2023. These worrying statistics are a clear indication that the risks associated with such large events cannot be ignored.
Organizer Dominic Wölfe was optimistic and emphasized that the program included more than just motorcycles. A stunt show and a wheelie simulator are planned to provide additional entertainment. Despite the challenges, the Simson community is looking forward to an exciting weekend full of emotions and nostalgia. However, it remains to be hoped that this year peaceful joy will prevail over violence and extremism.
