Tempo 80 on B 93: Zwickau lightning systems active again!
Today marks the anniversary of November 11, 2025, and there is news that affects drivers in and around Zwickau. A speed limit of 80 km/h has been in effect for several days on the federal highway B 93, just before the town entrance to Zwickau. This measure was introduced immediately after the Crossen junction to increase traffic safety in this area. Drivers will be informed of the new speed limit approximately 200 meters after this junction, which will enable them to adjust their speed early. Drivers in the region should be prepared for increased speeding in the near future, making compliance with the new rules a top priority. The Free Press reports that these measures are not only intended to ensure greater safety on the roads, but also help to reduce traffic accidents.
Anyone wondering why there are so many speed checks on the roads right now should be reminded of the high level of discussion about speed limits in Germany. Our country is one of the last in Europe without a general speed limit on motorways. According to an analysis by the Allianz Direct Insurance 71% of Germans support the introduction of a speed limit, with 39% advocating that it be limited to 130 km/h. This social discussion is underpinned by the alarming figures: in 2023, 2,839 people died in traffic accidents, with excessive speed identified as the main cause in 43% of cases.
Safety comes first
The introduction of the speed limit on the B 93 is part of a strategy to increase overall traffic safety. North Rhine-Westphalia turns out to be a “lightning stronghold”: in 2023 there were 923 speed enforcements here. In fact, the state also has the highest number of serious speeding violations, as shown by the 714 violations over 70 km/h. This shows that the control measures in Zwickau are not isolated, but are part of a nationwide commitment to improve road safety.
Despite the heated discussions about speed limits, the fascination with speed in Germany remains unbroken. One might think that drivers would drive slower on stretches of road with unlimited speed limits - but according to current statistics, 83% of drivers drive slower than 130 km/h on motorways with no speed limit. But the increasing number of traffic accidents has led to a trend that has been going on for years: more controls and greater safety efforts, especially in well-known hotspots such as the Nürburgring.
These accompanying activities will encourage adherence to the speed limit on the B 93 and raise hope that there will be fewer traffic accidents and therefore fewer injuries in the coming weeks and months. It is clear that making the roads safer is in the interests of all road users.
