Theater in the open air: Prinzenraub opens cultural hype in Hartenstein!
The Hartenstein castle ruins are currently becoming the setting for a unique theater event. The play “Prinzenraub – a tragic fool’s game” will celebrate its premiere on June 29, 2025. It deals with the infamous kidnapping of Princes Ernst and Albrecht in 1455, which represents a striking chapter in Saxon history. In this performance, the renowned playwright Ramona Markstein shows how the Junker Kunz von Kauffungen kidnapped the two princes from Altenburg Castle, thereby triggering a sensational drama. [Blick] reports that the piece uses original texts and old traditions to bring the story to life.
The performance takes place directly at one of the original historical locations, the Hartenstein castle ruins. This setting contributes to the authenticity of the event and makes the spectators part of this historical narrative. With over 30 amateur actors from Hartenstein, Thierfeld and the surrounding villages, the cultural life of the region is cast in a new light. All three events were already sold out - proof of the great interest in the Robber of the Prince and the artistic performances on site.
Cultural highlight in Hartenstein
The organizational team, consisting of members from various associations such as the Paul Fleming Association, the Hartenstein Castle Ruins Association, and the Hartenstein Cultural Association, has dedicated itself to addressing this historic topic. According to [Schlossruine Hartenstein], the team still needs support: citizens are invited to contribute actively or financially to the realization of this cultural highlight.
The play is an exciting addition to the Altenburg Festival, which begins just a week later. The players all come from Hartenstein, Thierfeld, Zschocken and the surrounding area, showing how strongly community projects can shape the cultural identity of a region.
The story of the prince robbery
But what is actually the background to this spectacular kidnapping? The Altenburg Prince Robbery, also known as the Saxon Prince Robbery, occurred on the night of July 7th to 8th, 1455. The Junker Kunz von Kauffungen and his accomplices decided to kidnap the two young princes in order to put pressure on the Saxon Elector Frederick the Meek. [Wikipedia] explains that the conflicts between Kunz and the Elector resulted from the Saxon Civil War, which took place from 1446 to 1451. Although Kunz had gone to war on the Elector's side, he had a strong motive to seek revenge after being forced to pay a large ransom for being captured.
The kidnapping was successful because the elector was traveling at the time and a large part of his court was not present. The alarm was raised, but during this critical time the mayors in Zwickau and Chemnitz were unwilling to pass on the warning. After the kidnapping, the plans were put into motion anyway, and the princes were hidden in the “Prince’s Cave,” while Kunz von Kauffungen was later captured and executed.
The exciting story and the novel approach to the events in Hartenstein attract not only history enthusiasts, but also those who simply want to enjoy an entertaining evening in the open-air theater. At the same time, a special exhibition on the topic of “Prince Robbery. Hartenstein” can be seen in the local museum, which is open until November 2nd. In the authentic rooms that were probably inhabited by Kunz, visitors can immerse themselves deeply in history.
The combination of theater and historical culture creates a lively atmosphere and allows old stories to blossom again. Whether as a spectator or an active supporter: The Robbery of the Prince and the artistic commitment in the region invite you to become part of a great cultural adventure!
