Traffic chaos in Zwickau: Crimmitschauer Straße closed for months!
In Zwickau there are currently restless times for drivers on Crimmitschauer Straße. Since July 14, 2025, traffic conditions at the central intersection of Crimmitschauer Straße / Werdauer Straße / Humboldtstraße have become unstable, as the Free press reported. The city has closed the intersection in two sections in order to carry out urgently needed construction work.
In the first section, which will last until the end of August, Crimmitschauer Straße between Werdauer and Moritzstraße is affected. This is followed by the second section, in which Werdauer Straße up to Bahnhofstraße in Humboldtstraße is also closed for around eight weeks. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan to modernize transport infrastructure while avoiding prolonged construction sites and additional closures, according to information from the City of Zwickau.
Extensive improvements are pending
The planned work is varied and includes the replacement of water, sewage and power lines. Particularly noteworthy is the barrier-free expansion of the intersection, which is being carried out in cooperation with guidelines from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Mobility. New surface coverings and floor indicators for blind and visually impaired people are used to improve accessibility. State Secretary for Transport Andy Becht emphasizes how important barrier-free access to public transport spaces is for the participation of all people.
Crimmitschauer and Werdauer Straße remain accessible, but with restrictions. Pedestrians can use the sidewalks and the signalized pedestrian crossings are also operational, making access easier for everyone. In the second section, Humboldtstrasse will be completely closed, although the sidewalk at the old people's home will be retained.
- Erneuerung der Trinkwasserleitung (ca. 82 m)
- Barrierefreier Umbau der Querungsstellen und Verkehrsinseln
- Sanierung des Asphaltbelags
Employees from Signaltechnik Roßberg have already started night shifts in order to move the work forward quickly. The replacement traffic on tram line 4 will also be rerouted, which will have an additional impact on traffic volume. The Schumannstrasse stop will be moved to the Ringkaffee stop for the duration of the construction work, while the Georgenplatz stop will be moved to Moritzstrasse.
Quick remedy for commuters
The city of Zwickau has clearly signposted the diversions to provide drivers on Crimmitschauer Straße with the best possible orientation. But traffic congestion doesn't stop there: Many drivers use illegal shortcuts to weave their way through traffic jams, which further complicates the situation.
Completion of the extensive construction work at the intersection is scheduled for November 2025. It remains to be seen how the new measures will affect traffic flow and whether the upcoming changes can actually bring about a noticeable improvement. For many commuters and residents it is clear: there is a lot of hope for the upcoming changes!
With all of these developments, it is important that the city regularly informs residents and commuters about the progress of the work and is available if they have any questions or concerns.
