VW sales charts: Tiguan overtakes Golf! This is how the bestsellers change!

A lot is happening in the car market, and Volkswagen will remain a hot topic in 2025. The Golf, once the brand's absolute driving force, has experienced a certain decline in sales in recent years. In the past, over a million units of the popular compact car were sold annually, while in 2024 only a good 300,000 models found their way to buyers. As the WAZ reports, however, there is a clear new favorite: The Tiguan has reached the top with 546,000 deliveries in 2024, making it Volkswagen's bestseller.

It is also interesting that the Golf has now slipped to fifth place in the VW sales charts, while the Passat with 505,000 deliveries and the Polo with 472,000 units are also well represented. The Passat continues to be one of the best-selling models in Volkswagen's history and has now sold over 30 million units. The Jetta follows in fourth place with 350,000 units and the Audi Q5 in sixth place with 298,000 units.

A new start for electric cars

Electric vehicles are slowly but surely becoming more important. In May 2025, the VW Golf was the most popular car in Germany with 7,495 new registrations, but the VW ID.7 with 3,146 vehicles showed that the future is electric. The boom in new registrations of electric cars is also reflected in the overall 45 percent increase in May, according to reports from car dealership.

Volkswagen's electric models, the ID.4 and ID.5, had 182,000 sales, while the ID.3 had 149,100 units. Interest in electric mobility is increasing noticeably, especially in a market that is as dynamic as today's.

Market development and challenges

If you look at the global automobile market, you can see a slight overall increase in volume, although after Volkswagen Most regions recorded positive developments. In Western Europe, including Germany, new registration volumes also remained stable, while market conditions in various areas were influenced by fiscal policy measures and economic changes.

Vehicle affordability improved in many regions, but challenges from non-tariff trade barriers remain, making it difficult to exchange vehicles, parts and components. Despite these hurdles, major markets such as the US are experiencing slightly increased sales volume and availability, which may make times more optimistic.

In summary, it can be said that Volkswagen will continue to successfully drive forward the change to new vehicle generations in 2025. The Tiguan has replaced the Golf as the best seller, while electric cars are becoming increasingly important and new registrations are generally on the rise. It will be interesting to see how the vehicle world will develop in the coming months!
