Zwickau cycling oldie surprises with a double victory at the Salzburgring!

On August 12, 2025, spectators at the Salzburgring experienced a fast-paced motorsport event in which a very special participant was in the spotlight: 75-year-old Stephan Künzel from Zwickau. This cycling veteran not only thrilled the public but also the experts with his remarkable achievements. Künzel secured two trophies that day and came second in the time trial at the Salzburgring. His wildcard for the event allowed him to be part of this spectacular event, like Free press reported.

With a broad grin, the senior was happy about his result and about the honor of being called up for Germany at the award ceremony. “I'm just happy that I can still take part in cycling so actively,” he expressed his satisfaction on the first weekend in August. Künzel, who is known for his endurance and tireless commitment, has traveled to many countries and races in his long career.

Various races at the Salzburgring

However, the Histo-Cup at the Salzburgring was not just a highlight for Künzel. Various exciting races took place on the same weekend, including the BMW 325 Challenge and the MINI Cooper Cup. In the first race of the BMW 325 Challenge, Matthias Heinemann took the lead before Jakob Schober overtook him after the restart and won the race. Max Zupanic, who started as pole setter, had to admit defeat due to a spin and a subsequent time penalty. The race was marked by various incidents, including the deployment of the safety car, such as Motorline reported.

In the MINI Cooper Cup, Matthias Jocher was the fastest, followed by Hannes and Stephan Jocher. Many other racing groups such as the historic touring cars and the youngtimers were also present and provided exciting races that kept the audience on their toes.

A look at cycling

Cycling, also known as bicycle sports, includes various disciplines that are carried out on a bicycle. The most popular include road cycling, mountain biking and cyclocross. The sport has a long tradition that dates back to the 19th century. Cycling was already experiencing a boom back then and was promoted with exciting competitions and numerous clubs. What is particularly noteworthy is that cycling has been a firmly established discipline since the first Olympic Games in 1896, as in Wikipedia can be read.

Stephan Künzel's success at the Salzburgring is further proof that cycling not only inspires young athletes, but also unites generations who live out their passion for cycling. In a world where modern training and competition formats are constantly changing, the appeal of this fantastic sport remains unbroken. There is great anticipation for upcoming races, the next event will take place in Rijeka/Croatia from June 9th to 11th. So, dear cycling friends, it remains exciting!
