Shock wave in schools: bomb threats shake all of Germany!
In Germany, bomb threats are currently piling up. In Baden-Württemberg alone, around 180 threatening emails were received on Monday, as the State Criminal Police Office in Stuttgart announced. Not only the schools in Baden-Württemberg, but also in Rhineland-Palatinate, are particularly affected, where at least 50 schools were willing to alert. Similar incidents were also reported from Thuringia, where 36 schools are affected, as well as from Berlin and Brandenburg, where 13 and 22 schools received threatening emails. North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein are also affected, but no precise numbers were published here.
The State Criminal Police Office Baden-Württemberg also reported on a “lower three-digit number” of threatening emails that have been received in the past few days. The authorities take these threats very seriously, but have so far not been able to find any specific dangers. The spokesman for the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office described the situation as a "targeted nationwide campaign". The investigators suspect a connection between the bomb threats and the ongoing Abitur exams in Germany, which increases the fears and uncertainties among the students.
effects on school operations
The impending alarm has far -reaching consequences for the schools concerned. In Thuringia, high school and final exams were canceled, which significantly impaired planning and implementing the exams. A similar situation could also arise in other federal states in which similar threats have been received. Experts warn that such events not only disrupt school operations, but also heavily burden the mental well -being of the student body.
In addition to the incidents in Germany, reports of Austria are also alarming. Within three days, over 50 educational institutions, primarily schools, received threatening letters. The head of the Austrian Constitutional Protection Authority expressed concern about the worrying number of cases in Austria, which illustrates a tense situation in the entire German -speaking area. Here too, a connection between the threats with the examination dates is suspected.
global perspective
These incidents are in a larger, international context. According to Destatis 2022 and 2023 registered over 6,000 attacks on educational institutions worldwide. Such attacks not only affect buildings, but also students and teachers. These violent attacks, which are of different nature, illustrate that school visit in many regions of the world are associated with enormous risks. Attacks such as military occupations and targeted violence against girls, prevailing millions of children to go to school.
On September 9th, the International Day to Protect Education from Attack will also be committed to draw attention to the emergency of these children. The right to education is anchored as a fundamental human right in Article 26 of human rights declaration. The Global sustainability goals of the United Nations (SDG) strive to create safe and inclusive educational institutions by 2030. Against this background, it is alarming to see how security at schools is currently in question in Germany.
