Dispute over passenger rights: Compensation is only planned from four hours!
Luxemburg, Luxemburg - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister of Consumer Protection Jacqueline Bernhardt (left) sharply criticized the planned reforms of the EU to adapt passenger rights. After a meeting of the EU Transport Minister in Luxembourg, in which a majority of the states voted for a change, compensation for passengers will only be paid out after four hours, instead of three hours as before. Bernhardt describes this change as a step backwards in consumer protection and calls on the federal government to defend itself against this regulation. Germany did not agree to the proposal and continues to be committed to ensuring that passengers receive their compensation claims with a delay of three hours, as
flight distance Th> | Current compensation Th> | new regulation (after delaying time) Th> |
---|---|---|
to 1,500 km | 250 euros | 4 hours |
to 3,500 km | 400 euros | 4 hours |
over 3,500 km | 600 euros | 6 hours |
Bundes and consumer advocates fear that the new rules could further reduce the protection of flight passengers and prefer airlines. At the same time, European legislation is also seen as an opportunity to create a uniform framework for passenger rights. The negotiations will be continued in autumn with the European Parliament, which takes up a similar position as the German government and does not want to accept a reduction of the current standard, as reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung
