Altenburger Land: 20 years of MDV - New ticket system for better mobility!
On August 26, 2025, the Altenburger Land district will celebrate an important anniversary: 20 years of membership in the Central German Transport Association (MDV). Since August 2005, the region has benefited from numerous advantages that this membership brings with it. A uniform ticket for buses, trains, S-Bahn and trams makes local transport much easier. District Administrator Uwe Melzer was grateful for the successes in local public transport. The continuous efforts to improve, especially in rural areas, are highlighted by MDV authorized representative Juliane Vettermann. She emphasizes that the “Regional Transport Connects – Mobility for Altenburger Land 2.0” project in particular aims to better connect rural places.
Expansions in local transport
The concrete achievements speak for themselves: a common ticket system, the mobile MOOVME app and the modernization of local transport services have made significant progress in the region. Since December 2022, four new RufBus regions and two new TaktBus lines have been introduced. These improvements not only ensure that commuters and occasional drivers benefit from a more flexible mobility offer, but they also make it easier to switch between the regular network and the on-call buses and shorten waiting times.
The new offer improves accessibility to schools, workplaces, doctor's offices, shopping opportunities and leisure and cultural facilities. So you can say that the mobility of the population in Altenburger Land is strongly promoted.
Important role of public transport
Public transport is not only important locally, but is also part of a larger movement. In Germany, around 26 million passengers use buses and trains every day. A current study by the VDV shows that public transport not only saves 10 million car journeys every day, but also makes a decisive contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2023 alone, VDV member companies saved 10 million tons of CO2. vdv.de has found that every kilometer traveled using public transport saves an average of 95 grams of greenhouse gases and 14 grams of nitrogen oxides.
The importance of this mobility transition and the associated infrastructure should not be underestimated. Thanks to the sustainable mobility economy, we not only benefit from an improved environmental balance, but also from an economic benefit of around 118 billion euros in Germany. This creates jobs and ensures equal participation for all citizens.
For the future, it will be exciting to see how the Altenburger Land district and the MDV continue to work to promote the mobility of their citizens and bring the region even closer together.
