Monument Awards 2025: Commitment to local heritage in the Altenburger Land honored!
In the Altenburg district, special attention is paid each year to civic engagement in monument preservation. On the occasion of Monument Day, this year's monument prizes were awarded on September 13, 2025. The city of Altenburg also invites you to submit proposals for the Johann Georg Hellbrunn Monument Prize, which will be awarded on September 12, 2025 in the Altenburg Brothers Church.
The Altenburg district awards two monument prizes, which this year go to: Parish council of the Wildenbörte-Hartroda parish for the general renovation of the village church in Hartroda and to the Mining and Homeland Friends e.V. Zipsendorf as well as the SWG Meuselwitz for the renovation of the savings bank building in Zipsendorf. The awards recognize the great commitment of citizens and institutions that are committed to preserving the district's cultural heritage.
Monument Awards 2023
The first prize went to the village church in Hartroda, whose general renovation took an incredible 16 years and cost 295,000 euros. Not only were the exterior plaster and the roof structure renewed, but the valuable Opitz organ was also restored. This measure was only possible through a combination of donations, church money and grants from the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation.
The second monument award project relates to the savings bank building in Zipsendorf, which was built in 1929. Originally built as an administration building, the facade of the house was skilfully restored in a way that was worthy of renovation and preservation. The close cooperation between the city of Meuselwitz and the monument authority ensured that the historical architecture was preserved.
Honor for Pastor Thomas Eisner
District Administrator Uwe Melzer also presented the “Thanks and Recognition” medal to Pastor Thomas Eisner. The native of Altenburg has made a name for himself through his tireless work in church renovations in the Altenburger Land. His work strengthened citizens' identification with their places of worship and led to the founding of numerous church building associations.
In addition, monument preservation plays an important role in the creation of meeting and event venues beyond church communities. Another appropriate reference to the relevance of monument protection comes from the website of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, which Federal Prize for Craftsmanship in Monument Preservation mentioned. It emphasizes that involvement in rural areas not only contributes to the identity of citizens, but also secures long-term jobs.
The city of Altenburg is now looking for proposals for the Johann Georg Hellbrunn Monument Prize, which honors special achievements in monument protection and preservation. Suggestions from owners, architects and citizens must be submitted to the Lower Monument Protection Authority in Altenburg Town Hall by August 1, 2025. Particularly pleasing: The prize money is donated by the Altenburg Energy and Water Supply (Ewa) and is expected to amount to several thousand euros.
In view of the exciting projects and the committed citizens, the city hopes to receive numerous applications for the monument award. Participation details are available online and everyone can find out how they can contribute to preserving cultural heritage.
