Cultural highlights in July: art, music and exciting tours in Altenburg!

In Altenburg, July 2025 will be a real treat for culture and art lovers. With a whole range of events, concerts and exhibitions, this city brings a breath of fresh air into leisure activities. The Lindenau Museum, which has two exciting exhibitions this year, promises special highlights.

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the castle church of the Altenburg Residential Palace will resound with the “8th Bach Organ Vespers” by Daniel Beilschmidt at 5 p.m. An immersive experience for just 7 euros, reduced 5 euros. Tickets are already available at the museum box office and the tourist information office. But that's just the start!

Art and culture in focus

There will be a deep insight into the connection between art and literature on Thursday, July 3rd, at 6 p.m. in the Lindenau Museum. Dr. Friedrich Schmidt gives a lecture on “Franz Kafka and the visual arts”. Passionate literature fans shouldn't be missing out!

Saturday, July 5th will be particularly exciting. An aircraft model building workshop is on the program, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lindenau Museum. Under the motto “Towards new heights”, participants of all ages are invited to design their own model aircraft for 8 euros.

Visitors can also take a guided tour of the Playing Card Museum at 2 p.m. on the same day – an experience for just 3 euros per person. An excellent argument for spending time in Altenburg this weekend.

Exhibition “Stars over Paris” thrilled

An absolute must for art lovers is the exhibition “Stars over Paris”, which presents the works of the Parisian artist Sergio Birga (1940-2021). It is a tribute to his artistic encounters, especially with German expressionists, and is the first public exhibition in Germany to show Birga's works. Around 80 paintings are shown here that capture the artist's distinctive view of the world. Birga was known for his woodcuts, which were often inspired by Franz Kafka's novels. The exhibition is temporarily housed in the Lindenau Museum as Altenburg Castle is being renovated. A catalog that accompanies the exhibition contains not only contributions from experts, but also letters and drawings provided by Birga's widow.

To understand the encounters and creative exchanges with artists such as Otto Dix and Ludwig Meidner, a visit to the exhibition on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 11 a.m. is particularly recommended. Emilia Pradel will accompany the “Stars over Paris” tour, with entry prices at 4 euros and 3 euros reduced.

Interactive experiences in July

After so much visual inspiration, the interactive experiences can't be missed! On Sunday, July 20th, the Altenburg Games Festival will take place in the Lindenau Museum from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone who enjoys board games will get their money's worth here.

At the end of the month, the Lindenau Museum invites you to an evening workshop for adults on Wednesday, July 16th at 6 p.m. “Memory + wine – bind a photo album” is the motto, with participants getting a glass of wine for 8 euros. Creativity is very important here!

So much culture and creativity in one place - it will be clear to everyone that Altenburg in July 2025 will be a real highlight for all those interested in art and those who enjoy leisure activities. Be there and experience the diversity this city has to offer!
