Experience art and history: major exhibitions in Thuringia!

Amidst the summer exhibition atmosphere in Thuringia, there are some highlights that art and history enthusiasts shouldn't miss. You can now experience exciting insights into various aspects of the culture, including some fascinating exhibitions that deal with the history and heritage of the region.

Particular attention is paid to this Schiller Museum in Weimar, where the “Faust” exhibition will attract visitors from May 1, 2025 to November 1, 2027. With interactive stations, comics and video insights, the exhibition addresses essential questions about identity, capitalism, love and nature. Also worth a visit are the opening hours, which range from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer months. Admission prices are affordable, at 8 euros for adults and children under 16, who can even go in for free.

History in focus

The German Peasants' War, a crucial chapter in German history, is currently being examined in Mühlhausen and Bad Frankenhausen. Under the title “freiheyt 1525 – 500 years of the Peasants’ War” The state exhibition from April 26th to October 29th, 2025 invites you to look at the social, political and cultural changes of that time from a new perspective. With over 400 objects from 80 lenders on 1,500 square meters, the Mühlhausen Museums present valuable insights into the peasant uprisings of 1524/25. The exhibits include impressive highlights such as Thomas Müntzer's runic sword and original archaeological finds that illustrate the life of the rural population at the beginning of the 16th century.

The exhibition in the Panorama Museum Bad Frankenhausen offers an additional highlight with the monumental painting “Early Civil Revolution in Germany” by Werner Tübke, which is an impressive 1,722 square meters in size. Visitors can look forward to a deep insight into the events and circumstances of the Peasants' War, while the Cultural History Museum presents the reception of this important uprising over the centuries.

Art and treasure culture

The exhibition “China’s Gold and Gotha’s Treasures” will also be held in Ducal Museum in Gotha from June 22, 2025 to January 11, 2026 to draw attention to the gold treasures of the Ming Dynasty. With an affordable entry fee of 8 euros, this exhibition also features a wealth of historical objects.

Altenburg attracts visitors with the exhibition “Drawing Board and Pincushion” by Ursula Jobst, which can be seen from July 18, 2025 to October 19, 2025. This exhibition offers exciting access to creative design and is free to enter. There is also the opportunity to discover the “hidden world of the Altenburger Magdalenenstift”, which can be visited from June 24th to October 26th and offers entry for 8 euros.
