New bunker for pyrotechnics: Altenburg is planning explosive storage!

Something is happening at the Altenburg airfield in Nobitz: The empty bunker, which was once used to store ammunition by the Soviet Army in the GDR, will soon be put to a new use. Flugplatz Altenburg-Nobitz GmbH is planning to convert the bunker to storing pyrotechnics. The location, near the Niederleupten district, offers good conditions for this activity – cool and dry.

At a last meeting of the local council, community approval for the planned use was given with only one opposing vote. “It was very important to us to clarify the security measures from the start,” explains the mayor. Several measures are planned to convert the bunker into use, including the installation of a security door and the closure of a barred window. In addition, the bunker is fenced with a rod mesh fence to further increase security.

The users and their plans

Dreamfireworks GmbH from Rositz will use the new storage space and plans to store a total of 9.5 tons of pyrotechnics in an area of 250 square meters. The pyrotechnics are currently stored at various locations in the district, which is not optimal in the long term. “The new location brings planning security and better opportunities for compliance with storage standards,” said a company spokesman.

Safe storage of pyrotechnic products is crucial. According to feuerwerk.net, these must be stored in a cool and dry place, ideally in the original packaging, to ensure their shelf life. In Germany, the storage regulations for pyrotechnics are subject to strict rules. For example, a maximum of one ton of properly packaged goods may be stored in unoccupied warehouse buildings, while in the commercial sector the limit is 60 kg gross in a building used exclusively for commercial purposes.

The applicable regulations

The plans for the conversion of the bunker are therefore in line with the applicable regulations. Experience from the industry shows that with proper storage, most fireworks can last almost indefinitely. For storage in the bunker, an aviation permit was requested, among other things, which is necessary in order to be able to use the bunker as a pyrotechnic storage facility.

Supervision of the warehouse should also be ensured. This is particularly important because the bunker is 410 meters away from the nearest residential development, which is well above the legal requirement of 140 meters. The minimum distance to traffic areas and other sensitive areas is also taken into account in this planning: The bunker is located 375 meters from the Fire Department Schmitz company and 510 meters from the runway.

With all of these safety precautions and compliance with the relevant regulations - including according to baua.de - the system is ideally equipped for the new task. Residents can rely on professional handling and strict adherence to safety regulations when the motto is: “Let the lights shine!”
