Tatami bath in Schmölln in front of: community fights for rescue!
In Thuringia, more and more swimming pools are facing the closure, which is a real problem for many communities. The Tatami bath in Altenburger Land is particularly affected, which may have to close its doors at the end of the year. This message not only causes excitement for bathing friends, but also drives the staff of Stadtwerke Schmölln to actively work for the preservation of the swimming pool. Thuringia24 reports that on July 8, 2023 we do not want to conclude large posters with the lettering "we do not want to conclude". The message is clear: the population should be made aware of the dramatic situation!
Bad director David Neumann emphasizes how important it is to mobilize the public for the concern. "We need the support of the citizens," he says, announcing that five further posters in strategic places in Schmölln should be placed by the end of the week. A petition for the collection of signatures was also launched and has already collected almost 10,000 signatures - a clear sign of the determination of the community.
Financial situation of the Tatami bathroom
As can be seen from a staff meeting on Thursday with managing director Severin Kühnast from the municipal utility company, the operating costs of the fun pool are around 2.6 million euros annually. However, the income does not cover these costs, which leads to an annual loss of around one million euros by 2024. MDR informed that the city's and shareholder shares of the city have so far no longer been possible, but this will no longer be possible from next year. The reason: a one -time grant of 440,000 euros from the spa help of the state of Thuringia will then no longer be available.
Mayor Sven Schrade (SPD) urges financial support from the country, especially in view of the increasing energy prices that further tighten the situation. The district is also asked for help, but the district council has made it clear that the responsibility for operating costs lies solely by the city and the municipal utilities.
The situation in Thuringia
But the Tatami bath is not the only weakening indoor pool in Thuringia. Despite the 15 million euros in grants from the country, there are many municipal indoor pools in a precarious location. According to the Thuringian Association Association, there are 38 such baths in the country that attract almost ten million visitors every year. TAG24 reports that the association wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mario Voigt. He demands permanent operating costs for at least 30 million euros per year to keep the baths afloat.
These facilities not only have an important role for leisure activities, but are also essential for school swimming and rehabilitation courses. Given that 40,000 children learn swimming in the bathrooms, the risk of closure is a serious topic that not only affects the athletes, but the entire community.
The development remains exciting and it remains to be seen whether the efforts of the citizens and the city administration are sufficient to save the Tatami bath. One thing is certain: swimming pools are not only places of fun, but also a significant good for our society.
