Chaos in Thuringia: Tornado and violent storms require emergency services!
On Thursday evening, Thuringia was hit by violent storms, which triggered numerous fire brigade operations, especially in the Eichsfeld and Sömmerda districts. More serious damage was caused by a tornado that passed over Dingelstädt, while various accidents were reported on the A38 and A71 motorways. At least one person was seriously injured. According to a spokesman for the motorway police, the emergency services were under great strain because the severe weather situation required quick action. The German Weather Service (DWD) had previously warned of severe thunderstorms and made the population aware of the impending danger.
The forecast for next Friday calls for very cloudy skies, with highs around 24 degrees. You also have to expect heavy rain and gusty winds, which are expected to ease in the evening. On Saturday night, meteorologists expect cooler temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, while it is likely to remain dry, which is a welcome change after a restless day.
Further severe weather warnings and operations
But the storm situation is not yet over. The next severe thunderstorms began on Friday evening and were expected to once again affect Thuringia. Heavy rain caused further police and fire service operations, particularly in Gierstädt near Erfurt, where the town was completely flooded on Sunday morning. Access roads were closed for a short time. In Wutha-Farnroda, the fire brigade in Mosbach had to fight a tidal wave that swept knee-high through the streets and flooded houses and gardens.
The A4, A71 and A38 motorways reported several traffic accidents that were due to the rain-soaked roads. A vehicle overturned on the A71, leaving two people slightly injured. In another incident on the A4, a car skidded, resulting in one person being injured. In total, the damage amounted to around 58,000 euros after several other traffic accidents had occurred in the last few days.
Severe weather warning levels and weather forecasts
A tornado was spotted over Thuringia on Saturday, increasing concerns about the severe weather situation. The weather service also warned of extremely heavy rain, which was expected to bring up to 50 liters of water locally. The severe weather situation will remain tense in the coming days and temperatures could fluctuate between 24 and 27 degrees, while the mountainous region expects cooler conditions.
