Drug dealer from Duderstadt: Three years in prison for sausage packaging!

Last week, the Göttingen regional court made a striking judgment: a 39-year-old man from Duderstadt was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. He was found guilty of dealing in large quantities of narcotics on numerous occasions and of violating the Cannabis Act. This sentence follows an extensive criminal investigation that took place between summer 2020 and fall 2021, in which the defendant earned *a total of 56,600 euros* through drug sales, as reported [HNA].

The court found that the man cleverly packaged his drugs. What was particularly noticeable was the use of gold-colored sausage tins in which the amphetamine was sold in portions of 200 or 333 grams. In total, his production amounted to maintenance costs of at least 25,000 euros after he purchased ten liters of amphetamine oil. In addition, 1,000 Ecstasy tablets were delivered to his home address, which he resold for a profit.

Drug discovery and arrests

Parallel to the verdict against the 39-year-old, there was also a search that took place on January 16, 2024. *Two kilos of ecstasy*, 460 grams of amphetamines and other drug paraphernalia were seized in the apartment of a 32-year-old from Göttingen. The estimated street value of these drugs is around 22,500 euros, as Law and Politics informs. Here, too, the investigation has been going on for some time and the arrested man received an arrest warrant.

These criminal activities are not isolated, but part of a larger problem. Drug crime remains high in Germany, as statistics show. In 2023, approximately *347,000 drug crime cases* were recorded, an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. Of these, around 208,000 cases involve cannabis, some of which have been legalized since April 2024. Nevertheless, the situation remains worrying, as the number of drug deaths increased to around 2,230 people in 2023, as Statista reports.

A worrying development

Drug crime not only reveals a deep-seated social problem, but also poses a challenge for the security authorities. Even customs are repeatedly confronted with massive quantities of confiscated drugs that are smuggled into the country. The arrests involved *45,300 suspects* in the drug trade alone, the majority of whom were of German nationality.

The latest developments in Göttingen show that investigators are increasingly taking action against drug trafficking with covert measures such as surveillance and telephone monitoring. It remains to be seen what further measures will be necessary to counteract this dangerous development.
