Erfurt in change: five remarkable changes in city history

in Erfurt, the largest city in Thuringia with around 213,000 inhabitants, there are always exciting changes over the centuries. A lot has happened in the recent past. The current reporting helps to refresh old memories and impressively document the development of the city. A review of earlier times shows how much the cityscape has changed. So, as the Thuringian General reports, five new before and after scenes can be seen, which illuminate the multifaceted Erfurt from then and now. The first recordings were very well received by the readers.

The historical recordings of the Anger Kraftplatz, which received the Angerturm in 1961, are particularly impressive. This was up until 50 years ago, and today its gray shape is emblazoned on the tram depot on Magdeburg Allee. Some traces of the past are still visible in the city, such as a corner house that has now been empty on Nordhäuser Straße/Moritzwallstraße, which once served as a drugstore. Residents are not exactly enthusiastic about the lack of renovation of the building, here the clocks seem to stand still.

celebrations and structural transformations

Another highlight is the 700th anniversary of the Krämerbrücke, one of the city's landmarks. Numerous events and exhibitions await visitors here. The Krämerbrückenhaus also shows historical photographs in an exhibition in the Anger-1 goods store, which impressively underpin the importance of the bridge. The hotel at the Juri gagarin-Ring also celebrates 45 years, known in earlier times as a "cosmos", has lost a lot of its former shine and the striking stem.

Erfurt has a rich story that goes back to the old stone time. With its favorable location at the crossing point of the trade routes, especially Via Regia, the city quickly developed into an important trading center in the Thuringian area. The first documentary mention took place in 742 by the missionary Bonifatius, which laid the foundation stone for the development of Erfurt

from antiquity to modern times

Erfurt's history is characterized by significant events, such as the establishment of the city fortification in 1066, which is now one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. In the Middle Ages, the city was an education center, here Martin Luther also studied. But the story can also have darker chapters: In the Thirty Years' War, Erfurt was badly damaged and the dark legacy of the Nazi era is also unmistakable.

Overall, the city shows a colorful mix of the past and future, with the old town with its parish churches, half-timbered and town houses protecting an important legacy. According to Diercke, the city center is enclosed by two ring roads, which offers an impressive contrast between historical heritage and modern urban life.

Thanks to the engagement of the Erfurt city archive and Frank Palmowski, and the Hotel Radisson Blu, the stories and pictures from Erfurt's rich past come back to life and remind us of how significant the roots of the city are for their current form. When you walk through the streets, you have the feeling that both the past and the present are alive and continue to tell stories.
