Major fire in Erfurt: Fire brigade fights against clouds of smoke until Thursday!

An alarming incident occurred in Erfurt on Tuesday when the fire brigade had to fight a violent fire on an old industrial wasteland in the city area. Up to 60 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the flames, which quickly spread through the nested building with false ceilings and insulation materials. The fire not only caused significant material damage, but also massive traffic disruptions: Greifswalder Straße is closed between Blumenschmidtstraße and Am Kühlhaus until further notice. Police are urging residents to keep their windows closed as the acrid smell of smoke has been detected in many parts of the city.

The extinguishing work is a real challenge and is expected to last until Thursday. A large demolition excavator is used to reach hidden embers and fire pockets. On Tuesday the smoke was so significant that the column of smoke was visible for kilometers. Current reports from MDR show that the fire department will soon receive additional support from the police, who have so far found no evidence of injuries.

Alerts and environment affected

The warning app NINA has already issued an official warning, which remained valid until the evening hours. The population has been informed about the potential odor nuisance and the air quality has been severely affected. This situation is strongly reminiscent of a recent fire in Leipzig, where a similar scenario occurred. A fire was also reported in an empty warehouse in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg, which brought the warning app into action on Saturday afternoon. The smoke was also visible from afar, which led the police to consider this situation serious, as Tag24 reported.

As in Erfurt, the fire brigade in Leipzig was also under great demand. They were able to put out the fire, but parts of the building were so badly damaged that it had to be demolished. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident, which affected around 170 to 200 square meters. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the damage to the property has yet to be precisely determined.

The consequences and outlook

The current fire damage highlights the risks associated with vacant buildings. The fire department responded quickly in both cases, but the risk remains that such incidents could occur again as long as these buildings remain unused. The situation in Erfurt is now under control, but the long-term consequences on the cityscape and the safety of residents must be urgently considered. Authorities are working to determine the causes of the fire and take possible safety measures.

In the meantime, the appeal to the public remains to be vigilant and to react quickly in the event of new smoke releases. Safety strategies need to be reconsidered to avoid such fire accidents in the future. Stay safe and stay informed about warnings!
