Krämerbrücke Erfurt: A 700-year-old masterpiece is celebrating its anniversary!

The Krämerbrücke in Erfurt is not only an architectural attraction, but also a very special piece of living history. This unique bridge, which spans the Gera River, is the pride of the city and was built in 1325. It is considered the longest bridge in Europe that is continuously built and inhabited with houses and will celebrate its impressive 700th anniversary in 2025.

The hustle and bustle on the Krämerbrücke shapes the romantic flair of the old town. Around 80 people live and work here, and the atmosphere seems more like a large family. Craftsmen and small individual shops ensure that the place remains lively and attracts numerous tourists every year who are enchanted by this special ambience.

History and architecture

The Krämerbrücke is not only a product of its time, but also has an eventful history behind it. Originally constructed as a wooden bridge, it was rebuilt after several fires that struck the bridge in 1175, 1178 and 1213. The Erfurt Council acquired all bridge rights in 1293 and a new stone building was completed in 1325. Over the centuries it developed into a central trading center that was part of the west-east trade route Via Regia.

The bridge, which is 79 meters long, is made of impressive lime and sandstone masonry and has six visible barrel vaults. The architectural masterpiece combines tradition with a way of life and tells the stories of merchants and craftsmen who made a living here over the centuries. In the 32 houses that still adorn the bridge today there are shops for handicrafts and antiques that underline the charm of the place.

Celebrations and exhibitions

In order to properly celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Krämerbrücke, there will be a limited edition stamp with its motif in 2025. In addition, a permanent exhibition about the history of this extraordinary building awaits visitors in the Krämerbrücke Foundation building. The city of Erfurt has founded the foundation for the preservation of the monument and ensures that the legacy of the bridge is preserved for future generations.

The largest city festival in Erfurt “Krämerbrückenfest”, takes place every year on the third weekend in June and attracts numerous visitors with music, art and culinary delicacies. The Krämerbrücke not only offers a look into the past, but is also a pulsating center of lively culture.

The Krämerbrücke is more than just a trade route or a building structure; it is a living monument and a symbol of solidarity that weaves together the people, cultures and stories of the city of Erfurt. A visit takes you into a piece of history that is still full of life.
