A suspected act of sabotage recently occurred in Erfurt, putting public safety and political stability to the test. On the night of June 22nd, six Bundeswehr trucks were set on fire in a workshop area, which caused concern among both the investigating authorities and the public. The Thuringian investigators have taken over the investigation and are investigating possible Russian masterminds behind this incident. Deutschlandfunk reports that the vehicles are regular Bundeswehr vehicles that were not intended for the Ukrainian armed forces, although this was suggested in texts accompanying a Russian video.
The video in question, published on pro-Russian online channels, may show the beginning of the fire and is circulating on a Russian-language Telegram channel. While the origin and authenticity of the clip is still being verified, the accompanying text claims that the trucks were deliberately destroyed to harm Ukraine. This escalation is not only an attack on the Bundeswehr, but could also be seen as an attack on democracy, as Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier emphasizes. NZZ points out that similar incidents have already occurred in the past, such as in Erfurt in June 2022 and in Berlin in March 2023.
Investigations and possible backgrounds
The current investigations are ongoing in all directions and all relevant information is being evaluated. The Bundeswehr and the Thuringian authorities are cautious about speculation and do not rule out that the incident is part of a larger strategy by foreign actors. In a brochure published by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the authorities document an increase in acts of espionage and sabotage by Russian actors in Germany. Protection of the Constitution highlights that covert attempts to exert influence and an alcoholization of the rule of law have created a mysterious threat situation.
