Discover Thuringia's treasures: Open Monument Day on September 14th!
Gera, a city that is receiving a very special honor this year, will open the doors to over 40 historical buildings on September 14, 2025. This year's Open Monument Day, organized by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, will be held under the motto “Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?” stand. Thuringia, the true treasure trove of architectural and art monuments with more than 30,000 cultural assets, is using this day to bring its rich heritage closer to the general public. MDR reports that in addition to Gera, cities like Weimar and Jena will also offer interesting highlights.
Among the open monuments in Gera are not only the impressive Osterstein Castle, but also darker chapters of history such as the SED district leadership. Visitors can look forward to guided tours and an extensive supporting program in the culture and congress center, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Live music is played here, there is a family program and a “market of opportunities”. Press portal highlights that the Open Monument Day has been celebrated since 1993 and this year represents a kind of anniversary as it is taking place for the 30th time.
Cultural highlights in Thuringia
In Weimar, known for its residential palaces and parks, visitors can see the faithfully restored Red Tower and the Old Broadcasting Hall. In addition, various special tours are offered in the university town, which provide insights into the famous cultural history of this region. The architectural heritage is further highlighted in cities such as Mühlhausen and Erfurt, where medieval city centers meet modern events. For example, monasteries and important synagogues can also be visited here.
Another treat in the program for the Monument Days is the “Half Castle” in Langenleuba-Niederhain, a curious building project that has only been half restored. Their open doors also make former armaments factories and pretty half-timbered houses in Altenburg and the surrounding area accessible. This shows how the past not only tells stories but also holds artistic and architectural treasures. Denkmalschutz highlights the variety of possibilities.
An experience for the whole family
A family trip to Open Monument Day is not only educational, but also exciting. Whether it's the listed churches or the industrial monuments in need of renovation, everyone will find something to their taste. With guided tours, exhibitions and events such as farm festivals and nostalgic trolley rides, there is certainly something for everyone.
