In Gera, an important decision causes excitement: the city's crematorium will no longer make crematals on July 7, 2025. The reason for this step is technical defects that cannot be remedied sustainably. Affected families are asked to submit their funeral applications to the crematorium promptly, since all the crops already defined should be completed by the end of July 2025. However, the operation of the municipal party and the implementation of burials remain unaffected.

The city administration has already responded and is planning to build a new modern and environmentally friendly cremation system. "We want to meet the current technical and legal requirements," explains a spokesman for the administration. This project could also be part of a nationwide trend that has been observed since the past twenty years: more and more people are opting for fire burials. According to the information, around 75% of the deceased are now cremated in Germany.

The decision in Gera is no coincidence. As is well known, fire burials are energy -intensive and cause a considerable emissions of carbon dioxide - an average of around 18.75 kilograms per cremation. The cremation of a deceased requires about the same amount of energy as the power consumption of a four-person household over three and a half days. In Germany, the annual carbon dioxide emissions of the crematoriums add up to 250,000 tons. The conventional fire burial is therefore increasingly critical, also because of their environmental impacts.

What could be the solution? Innovative companies such as Cremtec rely on modern crematoriums that meet strict quality and test regulations. This investment technology ensures that emissions are significantly below the legal limit values and that both hygiene and employee standards are exceeded. In addition, energy consumption has been reduced by 26.5 percent in the expansion of the systems in the past ten years. To further minimize ecological footprint, they promote regenerative energies, including solar systems, as part of their strategy.

With a view to the new plans in Gera, the city could appear as a pioneer in environmental cremation. The new building could not only serve technical modernization, but also as an example of other cities that want to make their crematoriums more sustainable.
