On August 22, 2025, a very special theater event will celebrate its premiere in Altenburg Gera: “The Path of Orpheus,” a fascinating open-air theater spectacle that will take visitors through the streets and squares of the city. This production, directed by Kay Kuntze, presents the ancient Orpheus motif in a new way, combining scenic representations with musical highlights that range from music history from the early Baroque to the modern day. It will be interesting to see what emotional journey awaits the audience.
The Orpheus myth tells of a man whose singing soothes even the wildest animals and impresses the prince of hell. This classic story, which became popular in the 17th century as a subject for the newly emerging genre of opera, now comes to life as station theater. In various locations, including a farm and the kitchen garden, the audience is invited to accompany Orpheus on his emotional journey - from heights of happiness to the depths of sadness. “The Way of Orpheus” not only combines different theater arts, but also addresses universal human challenges such as courage, doubt and the transience of existence.
A unique experience
The Altenburg Gera Theater has come up with something very special with this project: ten scenic and musical stations await the audience, who can experience the performances on a comfortable hike of around 900 meters. The entire production is barrier-free and therefore accessible to everyone. To make the visit even more pleasant, there will be a buffet on site starting at 7:30 p.m., and spectators will be prepared even if it rains - free rain ponchos are available!
Musically, the audience is taken on a journey through time: the performances include pieces by legendary composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Joseph Haydn, Jacques Offenbach as well as modern sounds by Philip Glass and heavy metal. This musical diversity guarantees an experience that leaves a deep impression.

After the premiere on August 22nd, there will be numerous further dates in the following days until August 31st, followed by additional performances in June and July 2026. The exact dates are:
