Gotha has the flag for peace: 600 cities set a sign!
Gotha, Deutschland - On July 8, 2025, a strong sign of peace will be set in many cities in Germany: over 600 cities, including Gotha, will launch the flag of the "Mayors for Peace" alliance on this day. This global initiative is committed to an end to nuclear weapons and thus for a peaceful future. The bike is already running: "Mayors for Peace" was founded in 1982 by the Mayor of Hiroshima and now combines over 8,480 cities in 166 countries, including around 900 in Germany. Gotha Aktuell reports that the event will take place in Gotha at the historical town hall, where the flag is hoisted at 12:00 p.m.
The flag day is reminiscent of an important legal opinion from the 1996 International Court of Justice, which says that nuclear weapons states are obliged to lead serious negotiations to disarmament. According to Rosswein, over 500 cities in Germany deal with a clear message against nuclear weapons and for peace. The flag day also has a personal dimension: survivors of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki warn against underestimating the dangers of using nuclear weapons. So it is high time to stand up for disarmament! In a moment when the global community faces the challenge of avoiding arms competitions, this initiative gains additional importance.
The flag day in the cities
in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, one of the districts of Berlin, the flag is also raised. An invitation applies to all citizens: inside who want to take part in Alice Salomon Platz in front of the Helle Mitte town hall. District Mayor Nadja Zivkovic and district councilor Gordon Lemm underline the importance of peace in the face of current geopolitical conflicts. The district has been part of the "Mayors for Peace" network since 2004 and thus actively contributes to the global peace movement. Interested citizens were also able to register for speeches to express their personal commitment. Further information on participation and the initiative can be found on the website of the district office, such as [berlin.de] (https://www.berlin.de/ba-marzahn-hellersdorf/aktuelles/Pressemaytäreungen/2025/Pressemage department.
Nowadays there are more than 12,241 nuclear warheads worldwide and all nine nuclear powers modernize their arsenals. This underlines the urgency with which "Mayors for Peace" draws attention to the dangers of nuclear weapons. The initiative demands from the states to promote disarmament under international control to create a better, peaceful world. Especially at a time when the New Start Treaty between the USA and Russia is coming to an end and there are no current negotiations on a new contract, the flag day becomes a decisive moment in the fight against nuclear upgrading.
This is only to be said: Come by, shows flag and sets a sign of peace - together we can make a difference!
