Large Christmas trees for Gotha's festive season: set up in November!

The scent of pine needles is in the air, and Christmas magic will soon come to Gotha. On November 6th and 7th, 2023, the two impressive Christmas trees, each an impressive 20 meters high and with a crown diameter of 8 to 10 meters, are planned for the renovated middle and lower main market. The spruces come from our beautiful Thuringian state forest, specifically from the areas of the Finsterbergen and Oberhof forestry offices, and are located near the crossroads between Luisental and Oberhof, as Gotha Aktuell reports.

Collaboration between different partners ensures everything runs smoothly. Gruber Logistics from Gotha is responsible for transporting the festive trees on a low-loader, while BaumPartner from Erfurt is responsible for professionally felling, loading and setting up. The company 4Safety from Bad Langensalza is called in to carry out the safety inspection. A special thank you goes to Gruber Logistics for the sponsored transport, which not only makes the event easier, but also contributes significantly to its success.

The diversity of Christmas tree species

Choosing the right Christmas tree is a sacred ritual for many. Around 80% of the Christmas trees sold in Thuringia each year are Nordmann firs, which are characterized by their lush green, soft needles and are therefore ideal for children's hands. Alternatives such as Nobilist firs, which have silvery-blue needles and a scent of orange, or blue firs, which have an attractive growth pattern but lose their sharp needles quite early, are also very popular, as Thüringen Forst informs.

However, if you are looking for something cheaper, you can choose spruce trees, which are impressive in terms of price-performance ratio but are also ecologically harmless. To extend the lifespan of trees, they need about half a liter of water every day. It is suggested to store the trees in a dark, cool place until shortly before the festival and to saw off a two centimeter thick slice from the base of the trunk before setting them up - this ensures a fresh interface.

Sustainability in Christmas tree production

Growing Christmas trees is an art in itself, as the Mütherich company shows, which only plants potted young plants from its own cultivation and creates optimal growth conditions through various care and pruning techniques. From the third year onwards, pruning is carried out annually in order to direct growth and give the trees a harmonious shape. To ensure the quality of the plants, frost irrigation is also used to protect them from late frosts, as described on the Mütherich website.

Sustainability also plays a central role in Christmas tree production. For example, pesticides are used sparingly so as not to unnecessarily pollute the environment. With the aim of ensuring management that is as close to nature as possible, Mütherich pursues ten standards, which include, among other things, precautionary measures for habitats and the avoidance of glyphosates containing tallowamine. Such efforts are not only good for the trees, but also for our planet.

The Christmas market in Gotha promises to be festive and environmentally conscious. So if you stop by on November 6th and 7th, you can not only admire the magnificent trees, but also experience the feeling of home and tradition that is particularly popular in the cold season.
