New yearbook Gotha Illustre” celebrates the city’s history and architecture!
Today, November 3rd, 2025, Gotha is all about the city's history. A new volume of the city history yearbook “Gotha Illustre” has been published just in time for “City History Day”. In what is now the 9th edition, which was ceremoniously presented in the historic town hall on October 27, 2025, the focus is on the city's impressive architectural history.
This yearbook offers interested readers a total of 200 pages of exciting articles on important buildings such as Friedensthal Palace and the Prinzenpalais. But that's not all: the life story of Alfred Bohnstedt, the son of the famous Gotha architect Ludwig Bohnstedt, is also discussed. The latter is not only known for his venerable designs, but also received first prize for the design of the German Reichstag in Berlin.
The cultural role of Gotha
Another exciting aspect of this issue is the examination of Gotha's cultural role in the founding of the German nation-state in the 19th century. This impressively shows how the Gotha singers were involved in this historic process, including through the work of Adolf Wandersleb. The history of the Social Democrats in the Gotha district is also examined in detail, especially the developments in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The importance of Gotha as an ambassador of peace, which has existed since 1640 under Duke Ernst the Pious, is also acknowledged in this edition. Every reader will feel that this yearbook contains deep knowledge and local ties.
A year of celebration for the city
While Gotha is deeply rooted in its history, the city is currently celebrating another special event: the “1250 Years of Gotha” festival year. This anniversary marks the city's first mention in a document from Emperor Charlemagne and runs from October 25, 2024 to October 25, 2025. Over 200 events are planned in collaboration with a working group that includes numerous local organizations, including the Gewerbeverein Gotha e. V. and the district sports association.
Citizens are warmly invited to contribute their ideas and suggestions. The big highlight of the anniversary will be “Thuringia Day” in 2025, a festival intended to celebrate the diversity and cultural treasures of the region.
For everyone who is interested in history and architecture, the yearbook “Gotha Illustre” is available for 20.00 euros in the “Gotha adelt” shop of KulTourStadt Gotha GmbH.
