CITY CYCLING 2023: Record of over 184,000 kilometers cycled!
What a great success! The Gotha district once again pedaled hard at the CITY CYCLING 2023. From June 1st to 21st, participants from the district cycled more than 184,000 kilometers. This not only means a new record, but also significantly exceeds the previous year's mark of 150,000 kilometers. District Administrator Onno Eckert is visibly enthusiastic about the high level of participation and the excellent results of the campaign, which not only promotes climate protection but also health. According to Gotha Aktuell, the distance covered corresponded to 4.6 revolutions around the world or 73 times the distance from Gotha to Lisbon.
Flexible and active: The conditions for participation in CITY CYCLING are simple again this year. “Everyone who lives, works, belongs to a club or goes to school in the Gotha district can take part,” summarizes the Gotha district website. This year there were almost 1,000 active cyclists in a total of 91 teams. You could either form your own teams or join existing groups, such as school classes or clubs. The goal? Collect as many kilometers as possible and thus contribute to environmental protection.

The kilometers traveled not only promoted personal well-being, but also helped to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. If all of these distances had been traveled by car, around 30 tons of CO₂ would have been released into the atmosphere. This shows how important such actions are! According to information from the Klimabündnis, a total of 5 to 12 tons of CO₂ remain in the atmosphere for 1,000 years.
