Economic history of Coburg: traveling exhibition shows exciting developments!

In the city of Coburg, a breath of fresh air is blowing in the halls of the career information center (BiZ). Until September 14, 2025, an interesting traveling exhibition offers the opportunity to delve deeply into the economic history of the region. Again Franconian day reports, developments since the 19th century are examined here, which reflect both the tradition and the changes of the Coburg economy.

Stefan Trebes, head of the Bamberg-Coburg Employment Agency, spoke positively about the exhibition and emphasized its importance for understanding regional economic dynamics. The exhibition can be visited during the BiZ's regular opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those interested can find further information on the regional management website: www.regionalmanagementcoburg.de/wirtschaftsgeschichte.

From tradition to social legislation

But Coburg's economic development is not only shaped by local businesses. Germany acted as a pioneer in industrialization and social legislation and was an early adopter of various types of insurance, including health, accident and unemployment insurance. This did not happen out of nowhere, but was the result of developments dating back to ancient times. The Diaconia describes that social support systems already existed in the Middle Ages, when guilds and monasteries supported those in need. With his laws between 1883 and 1889, Otto von Bismarck laid the foundation for the modern social security system, which still protects many employees today.

Before Bismarck's reforms, working conditions were often catastrophic. Child labor was widespread and led to massive pressure on society to ensure social security. Responsible employers and the Inner Mission sought to alleviate the misery even as the socialist movement, seen as a threat to the state, was forming.

A look at the development of social policy

The beginnings of German social policy date back to the 19th century, accompanied by the industrial revolution, which brought with it new social challenges. As the Federal Agency for Civic Education As explained, the first government interventions to regulate child labor and introduce social insurance were a significant step in the right direction. These developments ultimately led to the statutory nursing care insurance of 1995, which was designed as a response to demographic challenges and changing social demands.

Social systems are not set in stone. They must continually adapt – be it due to demographic changes or new challenges arising from European integration. This leads to reforms in areas such as health, nursing care and pension insurance in order to maintain social peace and strengthen the social fabric.

Coburg's traveling exhibition on economic history is not only a look into the past but also a reflection of the constantly changing social conditions that shape our society.
