Grant of 126,000 euros: Thepra strengthens debt counseling in Gotha

A new funding is causing a stir in Gotha: The Thepra association has received a symbolic donation check for 126,000 euros, presented by District Administrator Onno Eckert. These funds are intended for the Gotha debtor and consumer insolvency advice center, which is supporting people in financial need this year. “The advice center is an important point of contact for everyone who needs help,” explains Eckert, highlighting the increased demand, especially among young people between the ages of 20 and 30.

Last year, the average age of clients fell from 44 to 42, and 4,125 consultations were carried out - a slight decrease compared to 4,194 consultations in 2023. However, similar numbers are expected for 2025 too. Unemployment, low income, illness and inefficient household management are cited as the main causes of excessive indebtedness.

A look at the challenges

Particularly worrying are the increased cost of living and debts from online payment services, which are currently frequent topics in consultations. These developments require a rethink in social work. The Thepra regional association's funding was increased by 6,000 euros to take account of the increased personnel costs. The association, which has been active in Thuringia since 1991, is committed to social work and education and stands for the connection between theory and practice.

It is important for people in Thuringia to have access to reliable advice. Among other things, there are various providers available for debtor and consumer insolvency advice. The addresses and contacts are diverse, including the Caritas region Central Thuringia in Erfurt and the AWO regional association for Central-West Thuringia in Weimar.

Given the challenges that many are faced with, how do people in Gotha rely on the advice offered in order not to end up in a financial dead end. Ensuring support and advice is more important than ever, and the collaboration of organizations like Thepra plays a crucial role in this.
