Two e-scooter drivers in Gotha: stopped and punished while under drugs!
On Friday, October 10, 2025, two e-scooter drivers caused a stir in Gotha when they were checked by the police while under the influence of drugs. At 3:30 p.m. the police checked a 21-year-old, followed by a check on a 24-year-old on Bahnhofstrasse at 4:30 p.m. Both drivers had to undergo rapid drug tests, which each came back positive. Blood samples were taken in the hospital to determine the exact drug content in the blood. Possible consequences for the two men are a driving ban and fines of at least 500 euros, as Gotha Aktuell reports.
Why are such controls important? The use of e-scooters is increasing rapidly in German cities, and the strict traffic rules also apply to this modern form of transport. Time and time again, muscle and speed are overshadowed by drug use, which increases the danger for all road users. In a similar case, the Zweibrücken Higher Regional Court decided that the standard driving ban for e-scooter drivers cannot be waived due to the vehicle's lower mass and speed. Drugs and alcohol significantly increase the risk, even if you are sitting on a light e-scooter, as the ADAC states.
Relevant penalties and consequences
The legal consequences of driving an e-scooter under the influence of drugs are clear: If an administrative offense occurs, you will usually be fined 500 euros, two points in Flensburg and a one-month driving ban. For repeat offenders, the penalties increase drastically, up to fines of 1,000 to 1,500 euros and even up to a year in prison for serious violations, as Blitzeranwalt documents. This shows that you should really avoid taking drugs while driving - even with an e-scooter. It can endanger not only your own safety, but also the safety of other pedestrians and road users.
One also wonders what was going on in the drivers' minds. Illegal drug use can have a massive impact on your ability to react, and it's not just the drivers themselves who are at risk. Accidents under the influence of drugs often end tragically, both for the driver and for bystanders. The best remedy for these problems? Refrain from taking drugs and show responsibility on the streets. Ultimately, it's about getting from A to B safely and keeping the risk for yourself and others low - and you just have to have a good knack for that.
