Fire in an apartment building: nine injured in Greiz!

Early on Thursday morning, October 9, 2025, a fire broke out in an apartment building on Grünrathstrasse in Greiz at around 3:00 a.m. The responding fire department evacuated 21 residents between the ages of 0 and 71, including nine people who suffered minor injuries. Six of the wounded had to be taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, but have since left. The affected building is currently uninhabitable due to soot and dirt. Property damage is estimated at around 50,000 euros, as MDR reports.

The situation was dramatic when a resident reported the fire via the emergency control center. The fire department's operation ended around 6:00 a.m. While the residents were initially accommodated in a gymnasium, they have now found accommodation with relatives. Particularly alarming: eight parked cars that were near the house at the time of the fire also sustained damage. The exterior mirrors of these vehicles, including a police car, were damaged. However, the police made it clear that there was no connection between this damage and the fire. According to preliminary findings, the fire broke out in the basement area of the house, but the exact cause is still unclear and is being investigated by the investigating authorities, as News.de reports.

Investigations and causes of fire

The police have interviewed residents as witnesses and are continuing to search for relevant information. Witnesses are asked to call 0365 / 8234 – 1465. The investigation into the cause of the fire is already underway, although the exact circumstances have not yet been determined.

In order to better understand the background to the causes of the fire, it is worth taking a look at the statistics from the Institute for Loss Prevention and Loss Research of Public Insurers (IFS). In recent years, around 2,000 fire cause investigations have been carried out annually, as FeuerTrutz has shown. This shows stable proportions of the most common causes of fire, with electricity and human error being particularly important. Special attention is also being paid to battery fires, which are on the rise due to the increasing use of battery-powered devices. In the current case, however, exact cause research is still pending in order to clarify whether similar circumstances exist.

What happened in Greiz shows once again how quickly fire can spread and reminds us to ensure safe conditions within our own four walls. While the investigation continues, the hope remains that the affected residents will find a new home as quickly as possible and be offered a positive outlook.
