Zwickau: Drinking water is again germ -free - chlorine remains for now!

Zwickau, Deutschland - In Zwickau there is relief: the drinking water is again germ -free! This good news was announced by the Zwickau waterworks on its website. This is a significant feedback for the residents who have looked at water quality in the past few weeks. As a precaution, the chlorination of the drinking water remains for the time being to avoid another contamination. The chlorine addition will be returned gradually, depending on the further location and the ongoing tests. The exact causes of the previous contamination are still unknown, but the search for the source is already in full swing. The measures for surveillance are carried out in close consultation with the health department, as well as MDR.

How did this situation come about? In routine examinations, the waterworks found coliform germs in drinking water on June 18, 2025. It was a minor load that affected different parts of the drinking water network. The waterworks Zwickau stirs up. Nevertheless, the drinking water for disinfection also became a chlorine. The increased chlorine content corresponds to the requirements of the drinking water regulation and is harmless to health. Anyone who stumbles through the light chlorine smell and taste in the water can be calmed down: the chlorination should be withdrawn in the coming days, according to the waterworks.

Fortunately, the water suppliers in the Zwickau district, Erzgebirge district and Vogtland report no further contamination. Only in the district of Central Saxony were minor evidence of bacteria reported in the northwestern part. Here the lines are currently rinsed and stunned to ensure the water quality. The situation is gratifying for the entire drinking water supply in Germany. In 2022, 74.1 million people were supplied with drinking water, whereby over 99 percent of the microbiological and chemical quality parameters met the requirements, such as the Federal Environment Agency.

Only 31.1 percent of the rehearsals showed limit value crossing at several points on the network, while over 99.9 percent of all samples on the tap were harmless. This data clarifies that the water supply is largely safe.
