New medicinal plant garden in Bad Liebenstein ceremoniously inaugurated!
The new medicinal plant garden was ceremoniously opened in Bad Liebenstein on August 12, 2025. The inauguration took place in the picturesque rose garden on Parkstrasse, an area that was in desperate need of an upgrade. Mayor Susanne Rakowski and pharmacist Angela Wenzel celebrated this special moment, but without the traditional ceremony of ribbon cutting or groundbreaking. Instead, they opted for an informal celebration that focused on the plants and their healing powers.
The medicinal plant garden is part of an ambitious project that is intended to enable Bad Liebenstein to be classified as a Kneipp health resort. The garden was created in collaboration with the city administration and the city gardeners. They were also joined by Kneipp health trainer Nadine Heusing and pharmacist Angela Wenzel, who together developed a concept to sustainably anchor the importance of local medicinal plants.
A garden full of healing powers
This garden is not just a place of beautiful plants, but a living classroom of natural medicine. There are five topic areas here that present a wide variety of medicinal plants. In detail it is:
- Haut & Wunden: z.B. Ringelblume, Arnika
- Männer & Frauen: z.B. Mönchspfeffer, Frauenmantel
- Schlaf & Beruhigung
- Magen & Darm: z.B. Pfefferminze, Fenchel, Kümmel
- Atemwege: z.B. Thymian
Particularly noteworthy is the insect-friendly rock garden, which was integrated into the staircase and thus also contributes to biodiversity. Interestingly, the old roses remain in the rose garden and provide an additional eye-catcher.
The first steps into the world of medicinal plants
The first tour of the new garden will take place next Friday, August 15th. Here Angela Wenzel will introduce visitors to the effects and areas of application of medicinal plants. The tour is part of the Kneipp action days, which take place from August 11th to 17th and emphasize the importance of local medicinal plants and the start of the herb collecting season.
Medicinal plants play a central role in phytotherapy, which is valued by Kneipp supporters. These are mild local remedies that are ideal for self-treatment. For example, herbal tea made from anise, caraway and fennel is praised as promoting milk production when breastfeeding, while arnica helps with inflammation and sore throat. Kneipp association states that marigold supports wound healing and fennel calms digestion.
The new medicinal plant garden will not only be maintained permanently, but will also continue to be developed. Digital information offerings are also planned in the future, which will make it easier for all visitors to access the topics of medicinal plants and naturopathy. A real asset for Bad Liebenstein and a beautiful place for everyone who is interested in the possibilities of naturopathy.
Bad Liebenstein is taking another step towards becoming a health location that combines tradition and modern knowledge. A beautiful place for nature and health lovers, and perhaps a small step against the general feeling of illness. A garden that really has a lot to offer!
