South Thuringia in the future atlas: Our region cuts so bad!

South Thuringia in the future atlas: Our region cuts so bad!

Ilm-Kreis, Deutschland - On July 10, 2025, the “Future Atlas” of the Research Institute forecast was published, an important ranking that evaluates the future chances and risks of 400 cities and counties in Germany every three years. The current results show that the South Thuringian counties are unfortunately far below in the ranking. Cities such as Munich, Wolfsburg and Stuttgart, which are undisputedly among the best regions, leave the representatives from the region in the shadows of their possibilities. In order to find their own circles in the list, the South Thuringian citizens have to scroll deeply, like [Insuedthueringen.de] (https://www.insuedthueringen.de/inhalt.kreis-kreis-besense-stichten-in- and-wartburgkreis.72f68187-fee-8bfa-----------TML) reported.

The criteria for the evaluation are diverse and range from population development, workplace situation to patent applications per capita and the proportion of highly qualified specialists. The expansion of renewable energies in particular was also weighted high. The challenges that result from structural change, digitization and demographic change have become significantly more important. The current recession is regarded as a stress test for the resilience of the regions, while the economic development of the past 20 years is analyzed. [Kommunal.de] (https://kommunal.de/zukunftbeschautten-aller 400-kreis-und-kreisfreien-Staedte-Ranking) emphasizes that 380 out of 400 counties in Germany suffer from a deteriorated labor market.

The best and the challenges

The top 10 of the regions with the best future prospects are still led by the metropolitan regions of the south. So you can find the top:

  • 1. District of Munich
  • 2. Erlangen
  • 3. Munich
  • 4. Ingolstadt
  • 5. Böblingen
  • 6. Wolfsburg
  • 7. Mainz
  • 8. Regensburg
  • 9. Stuttgart
  • 10. Starnberg

Here it has been shown that the strong south of Germany continues to dominate. The new promoters Mainz and Regensburg are particularly remarkable, which now also present themselves among the best. This ensures that the competition for workers and resilience in the south remains strong.

Many circles and independent cities have submitted their local future projects to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the forecast. This initiative proves that the

Future is actively designed primarily on site. On a dynamic map you can see which projects are being developed in the different regions and how they counter the challenges of digital change, climate protection and social participation. Kiwi-kiel.de offers interesting insights into how these local ideas can have great influence on the future development of the regions.

A look into the future

The results of the future atlas 2025 are clear and not very gratifying for many regions. While the chances in the Bavarian and Baden-Württemberg counties continuously improve and almost 91% of the circles have above-average future opportunities, it looks less rosy in North Rhine-Westphalia and other federal states. Here just half of the regions in the ranking improves. Many benefit from the investments in Brandenburg, while the rest of the republic has to deal with structural challenges. So it shows that the future remains uncertain and creative approaches and perseverance is needed to be successful in the less privileged regions.
