Dementia Week in the Ilm district: Together for more understanding!

In a week dedicated to dementia, the Ilm district will host a nationwide event from September 22nd to 26th, 2025. The aim of this initiative is to promote an open conversation about dementia and to reduce fear of contact. Dementia Week, which has been taking place in Germany since 2015, offers a varied program of specialist events, cultural offerings and hands-on activities. This reports in southern Thuringia.

The series of events aims to focus on central topics such as prevention, diagnosis and care for people with dementia. Participation in society is also discussed, because dementia affects not only the sufferers themselves, but also their families, friends and neighborhoods. “We would like to design the Ilm district as a space for encounters, learning and solidarity,” said the organizers. The aim is to promote an understanding that enables an appreciative discussion of the topic and opens up new perspectives on a dignified life with dementia.

A look at the program

Overall, participants can expect a wide range of offerings that include both informative and practical formats. A specialist day will take place on September 19th to offer experts and interested parties an initial introduction to the topic. In addition, the lecture “What Remains!” will take place on September 23rd at 4 p.m. in Großbreitenbach. offered. Participants are shown what potential and resources people with dementia can have in everyday life. The organizers welcome registrations, but spontaneous visitors are also welcome. Anyone interested can register by phone at 036781-23503 or by email at ffz@fggbb.de.

The primary aim of the campaign is to improve knowledge about dementia in society and to raise public awareness of the concerns of sick people. According to the national dementia strategy, it is necessary to create a dementia-sensitive environment in which those affected can lead a self-determined life and participate in social life. Voluntary engagement, such as visiting services or informal support from neighbors, plays a crucial role here.

A community event for everyone

Dementia Week will therefore not only be an information platform, but also a space for active participation. In the spirit of social responsibility as a whole, all Cologne residents are called upon to take part in the events and thus send a sign of solidarity. Together we can achieve a lot and develop a new understanding of the challenges faced by people with dementia.

“We want to have a good hand at integrating the topic into everyday life and improving the mood in society,” adds the organizer. In this way, each individual can not only learn, but also make a contribution to breaking down barriers and enabling family and social participation for everyone.
