30 years of Unibund: Anniversary celebrates successes in Halle, Jena and Leipzig!
A very special celebration is coming up: The Central German University Association Halle - Jena - Leipzig, known as the Unibund, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Founded in 1995, the Unibund has developed into an important player that promotes joint projects in research and teaching. To mark the anniversary, a festive event will take place on June 23, 2025 at 10 a.m. in the Paulinum - auditorium and St. Pauli University Church in Leipzig idw-online reports.
The anniversary celebration will be opened with greetings from the ministries of the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Saxony. During a panel discussion beginning at 11:30 a.m., prominent university representatives will share their thoughts on the institutions' successes and future efforts at excellence. Participants include Prof. Dr. Claudia Becker from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Prof. Dr. Eva Inés Obergfell from the University of Leipzig.
From success in research to an excellence strategy
Particularly noteworthy is the keynote speech at 11 a.m. on the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), which is considered the Unibund's most successful project. iDiv, which is funded by the German Research Foundation and is now permanently supported by the federal states and universities, has an excellent international reputation as a leading institution in biodiversity research. This is a clear example of empowerment through collaboration, as Prof. Dr. Andreas Marx from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena emphasizes.
The Excellence Strategy (ExStra), which makes many of these successes possible, aims to strengthen universities in Germany by promoting top academic performance. The German Research Foundation explains that the decision on future clusters of excellence is due in May 2025, which makes for an exciting time for universities in Germany.
A look into the future of the Unibund
In the afternoon program from 1:30 p.m., scientists will report on the collaboration and future initiatives. Lectures are planned on joint courses held by museums and collections as well as on cooperation between language centers. Attention is also paid to young scientists, with a mentoring program for postdoctoral researchers and the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Eastern Europe – Global Area” (EEGA).
The importance of the Unibund and the Excellence Strategy cannot be overestimated, because they contribute to the positive development of Germany as a university location. The Science Council emphasizes that annual funding is currently 533 million euros, with an increase to 687 million euros from 2026.
The cross-university perspective and the initiatives of the universities are not only a benefit for science, but also for everyone involved in the region. The Unibund Forum at the Leipzig Book Fair is awaited with great anticipation and enthusiasm. An exciting time for higher education in Central Germany is beginning and we look forward to what the future will bring.
