Dragon boat races at Strandschleicher: Action and team spirit on September 6th!

On September 6, 2025, the Strandschleicher area in Jena will once again become a competition arena for dragon boat races, when 27 active club and company teams compete against each other in the “Mixed Fun” category. The motto “Nothing works alone – everything works as a team!” sums up the central message of this event and shows how important teamwork is. The organizers, including the Jena rowing and canoeing club as well as the canoeing department of the university sports club, not only invite you to join in the excitement, but also set a social accent: part of the income goes to the Parents' Initiative for Children with Cancer Jena e. V. benefit.

The dragon boat races, which have been held in Jena since 2007, are becoming increasingly popular. What once started with just three teams has now grown to an impressive 27 teams. According to USV Jena, this year the races will take place in an exciting competition mode: 18 heats and 13 finals must be completed, with the first starting shot being fired promptly at 11:00 a.m. The award ceremony for the best three teams is scheduled for around 6:45 p.m., where, in addition to trophies, a challenge cup will also be awarded to the first place team.

An event for the whole family

Spectators are welcome to watch the exciting races from the shore of the Strandschleicher. However, it should be noted that cheering and racing noise can be loud, especially in the Südbad. The event not only offers a framework for the competitions, but also the opportunity for families and children to actively participate. For young visitors there is a craft corner and a children's raffle, where prizes are available for a small donation.

The dragon boat races are not only a sporting event, but also a community celebration. According to the organizers of Stadtwerke Jena, the event enables the teams to not only compete in sports, but also to actively support a good cause. Part of the entry fees will also be donated to support families whose children are or have been treated at the Jena University Hospital.

The dragon boat races are a wonderful opportunity to get involved, experience team spirit and enjoy a unique atmosphere on the water. For anyone who enjoys being active in the community, this is an event not to be missed.
