Discover science: School laboratory during the autumn holidays in Jena!
During the coming autumn holidays, schoolchildren have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of natural sciences through the student laboratory of the research center at Jena University Hospital. From October 6th to 10th, 2025, this special offer is aimed at twelve talented young people in the 9th and 10th grades. The lab offers an exciting range of topics ranging from heartbeat and anatomy to DNA and disease. Here, participants can experiment and learn how heart muscle cells react to medications and what role bacteria play on the skin. Future researchers will also be able to experience the process of bone healing up close.
As jenatv.de reports, the supervisors use the most modern microscopy and examination techniques to give the students a better understanding of biological processes. They can also take part in exciting activities, ranging from observing cell processes to an exit game to avoid infections. The application deadline ends on August 31, 2025, and interested parties can send their documents to katrin.hoffmann@med.uni-jena.de.
Promoting young talents
Jena is not the only place where interest in natural sciences is aroused. The Rudolf Virchow Center in Würzburg is committed to promoting young talent through various programs. Playful and experimental elements are combined here to promote fun in science. Particularly noteworthy is the “Rudis Research Camp”, which is aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 12. This camp offers young explorers the opportunity to explore the world of science in a fun way. Here, curiosity about exciting topics is often stimulated through experiments that deepen the curriculum.
The Virchowlab, on the other hand, is aimed at students from the 8th grade and also enables exciting experiments. In addition, there is the “Rudis Holiday Research Camp”, which offers an additional offer especially for previous participants in existing camps.
A look outside the box
Another important player in the field of student laboratories is the network of Helmholtz.de, which includes over 30 research centers and covers topics from astrophysics to marine research. The focus here is on getting students excited about science at an early stage and giving them a basic understanding of scientific work. The importance of science in society is essential, especially in times of fake news, which is why the network also includes teachers and teacher training students.
Science is brought to life through authentic insights into research, further training and numerous offers. The aim is not only to motivate children and young people, but also to inspire the next generations of researchers.
