World record: Thuringian Kloß inspires 2,000 spectators in Jena!

What a culinary event! On June 21, 2025, a very special village festival took place in the small town of Wombach near Lohr am Main, which was also dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the community. As part of this festival, the organizers ventured an exciting record attempt: they wanted to prepare the world's largest potato dumplings in order to outperform the previous record of 365 kilograms, held by Jena. With an ambitious goal of 400 kilograms and a special preparation technology, the organizers represented a huge challenge, since Franconian dumplings usually need a longer cooking time than their Thuringians.

As already from MDR , different ingredients such as mealy cooking potatoes, eggs and salt are used. This mixture ensures the typical mild taste that fits perfectly with sauces. However, the biggest challenge for the chefs in Wombach was the technical implementation. In order to cook the dumplings in the required size and quality, a stainless steel tank was necessary, which was filled with around 3,000 liters of water, and a cooking time of around 20 hours was planned.

subtleties of preparation

The preparation lasted about one and a half years. A great focus was on the fact that the dumplings could not simply be thrown into the saucepan, because larger dumplings tend to crash while cooking. In order to counteract this, the dumpling mass was kept in a special corset and lifted out of the water using a crane. These innovative techniques are proof of the high commitment and creativity of the Wombacher.

The expectations were high - they also had to, because to get the world record recognized, the huge lump had to be fully eaten. In addition to the approximately 2,000 onlookers who did not want to miss the spectacle, everyone was excited to see whether the dumpling would do justice to the high claim. And the tasting confirmed it: Many visitors expressed, the lump tasted fantastic and strongly reminded of the traditional Sunday dumplings that you can enjoy on special occasions.

the big whole

The entire campaign, however, went beyond the record garages. The proceeds from the sale of the huge monastery should go to a good cause: the benefit campaign of greatsters of the Bavarian Radio. The world record attempt not only became a festival of culinary delights, but also an occasion to do good together and to strengthen the village community.

The event was rounded off by a special cooking station and comprehensive technical preparation, which gave the whole project professionalism. The organizers in Wombach have shown that with a lot of effort and creativity, supposedly impossible is possible. And who knows, maybe the record -breaking potato dumplings from Wombach will soon adorn the history books!

In the near future, you will surely hear more about the event, possibly also compared to the successes in Jena, where a record attempt has also taken place. The anticipation for further exciting gastronomic challenges remains great - the potato clark is more than just a dish, it is a piece of home and tradition.
