Young people in Heldrungen victims of brutal attacks – police are looking for witnesses!

A worrying incident occurred on Tuesday evening, August 12, 2025, in Heldrungen, a small town in the Kyffhäuser district. At around 9 p.m., a group of three young people were suddenly attacked by unknown people. These were two young men and a young woman, aged 17 and 18, who were walking on Schlossstrasse. The incident began when a teenager was asked to remove his T-shirt with the name of a football club on it. When he refused, the attackers violently tore off the T-shirt, which resulted in minor injuries to the young people - one companion fell to the ground and was also injured, while the third companion fell into a ditch and was uninjured. The perpetrators are still unknown and are said to have taken the T-shirt with them. The police have started an investigation and are looking for witnesses to the incident. This is reported by the MDR Thuringia.

Such attacks highlight a growing problem: violence among young people is not an isolated incident. Football, as a sport, experiences these phenomena again and again. According to research by CORRECTIVE, attacks are unfortunately not uncommon in youth football. There are numerous risk factors, such as the pressure to perform and the physicality of sport, which can contribute to violence. This makes it all the more important that educational measures and prevention come into play in order to protect everyone involved.

The role of sport

But sport can also be a positive factor in youth prevention. The Approach to preventing violence in sport shows that sport not only reduces aggression, but can also overcome social barriers. Sports clubs have the potential to create identity and promote social skills. In addition, open sports offerings are important in order to reduce fears among socially disadvantaged groups and to strengthen integration.

However, it should also be noted that sport does not automatically have an educational effect when it comes to preventing violence. An understanding of values that emphasizes fair play and solidarity is essential to avoid a “cult of winning” and the violence that comes with it. This requires commitment from coaches, referees and also parents, who can often act as conflict amplifiers. Awareness-raising measures are therefore necessary to raise awareness of violence prevention approaches.

Overall, it is clear that the topic of violence prevention in youth football and in sport in general is complex. Incidents like the one in Heldrungen must not be forgotten and make it clear how important preventive measures are to promote cooperation in sport and prevent violence.
