New elevated tank in Nordhausen: drinking water supply of the future!

A special large-scale project is currently being worked on in the Nordhausen region that is intended to sustainably improve the water supply. The Nordhausen Water Association has begun construction of a new elevated tank on the Mühlberg near Niedersachswerfen. This facility will be the second largest in the county, with an impressive capacity of 1,200 cubic meters.

The project is not only a technical undertaking, but also a real challenge. Engineers and construction workers face demanding conditions in the gypsum karst area, which places special demands on the construction method. In an exciting logistics operation, a total of 21 special transports were necessary to bring the components of the finished plastic container, each weighing around 10 tons, from Freilassing to Thuringia. With a transport width of 4.5 meters, this is quite a caliber.

Technical highlights and implementation

The engineering company Peuker und Nebel was responsible for the planning, while the construction was carried out by the Mütze & Rätzel company. Five years of intensive planning preceded the groundbreaking ceremony, which took place in the last quarter of last year. In contrast to a classic reinforced concrete building, the decision was made here to use four chambers, each 300 cubic meters made of plastic. The dimensions are also considerable: the tubes have a diameter of 4.3 meters and measure a total of 18.7 meters in length.

Particular attention is paid to hygiene requirements, as the elevated tank will be filled with drinking water in the future. To ensure that everything runs according to the strict guidelines, the components have to be put back together on site. The project itself is well on schedule, with completion targeted for November this year. Once the work is completed, the elevated tank will disappear beneath the ground and thus blend harmoniously into the landscape.

Water charges and developments

Wasserverband Nordhausen bekanntgab. Außerdem sucht der Verband nach einem neuen Mitarbeiter für wasserwirtschaftliche Anlagen – ein Zeichen, dass die Infrastruktur kontinuierlich optimiert wird.

These developments show that the water board is actively working to improve water supply and quality. In particular, proper wastewater drainage and treatment are essential to protect water resources, such as Fichtner group emphasized. In addition to the planning and management of drinking water treatment plants, the experts' portfolio also includes innovative solutions in wastewater treatment.

Interested citizens can also visit the waterworks on Puschkinstrasse, which will be open to visitors on March 22, 2024. It remains exciting to see how the water supply in the region continues to develop and what new projects are launched.
